Healing by Herbs - Hindaba - Kasni

Healing Through Prophetic Medicine in Islam

Healing by Herbs

Hindaba / Kasni (Chicory)

There are three Hadith mentioning Hindaba but they are weak, we may consider them as a healing, they are as under :

1. "Use Hindaba & do not clean it, because everyday, drops from Jannah (paradise) fall on Hindaba's leaves".

2. "Whoever took Hindaba & then slept, he will not be affected by Sehr (magic) or poison".

3. "Among the leaves of Hindaba, there is not a single leaf on which drops from the paradise do not fall".

Hindaba's temperament changes according to the season. It is cold and wet in winter, hot and dry in summer and mild in spring and autumn. In general, Hindaba is cold and dry. It is beneficial and cools the stomach and causes constipation. When Hindaba, especially wild Hindaha, is cooked and eaten with vinegar, it constipates even more and is more favorable for the stomach and invigorating.

When Hindaba (chicory) is used as a bandage, it will relieve gastric inflammations, gout and hot ocular inflammations (in the eyes). In cases of scorpion stings, Hindaba helps when its leaves and stems are used as a bandage. Hindaba strengthens the stomach and opens the clogs in the kidneys, spleen, veins arid intestines. It clears and purifies the kidneys and helps them against the various hot and cold aches.

Sour Hindaba is the best for liver, while its extract helps against jaundice, especially when mixed with wet fennel extract. When Hindaba leaves are crushed and placed on hot swellings, they will cool and dissipate them. Hindaba cleanses and clears the chest and dissipates the heat of irritated blood and bile.

The best way to eat Hindaba is without washing it so as to preserve its effective ingredients. Hindaba works as an effective antidote against most poisons. When Hindaba extract is used as eyeliner (KOHL), it will clear and cleanse the eyes. Hindaba leaves are used in antidotes against scorpion stings, and against most poisons as we have stated. When Hindaba is squeezed and its water is mixed with oil, it will help against all toxic substances in general. When Hindaba stems are squeezed and their water drunk, it will help against scorpion and hornet stings and against snakebite. Finally, the sap of its stems brightens the white area in the eye.

Marzanjoosh / Marjoram

It is mentioned in a Hadith & we are not sure for its authority that "For you is Marjanjoosh (Marjoram), as it is good for Khushaam (which is cold & flu)". Narrated by Ibn Sunni & Dailamy

It is hot in the third degree and dry in the second degree, and when its aroma is smelled, it relieves cold headache caused by phlegm, colds, black bile and thick flatulence pressure. It relieves the congestion, clogs in the nose and head and dissipates most cold & wet swellings.

When Marjoram is used as a suppository, it increases the blood flow during menstruation, reduces the pain of menstrual cramps and is favorable during pregnancies. When its dry leaves are crushed and used as a bandage, it will relieve blood traces that appear under the eye. It helps relieve the pain of scorpion stings when it is mixed with vinegar (and then the affected area is bandaged with it).

Marjoram ointment helps relieve backache, knee pain and fatigue. Those who are used to smelling Marjoram aroma will not suffer from water accumulation in the eye, the cataract. When one administers its extract or water blended with the essence of bitter almonds in the nose, it helps against stuffiness that affects the nose and the head.

Marjoram, Oregano, Ajwain & Thyme are species from the same family. dried marjoram leaves in our market are full of dust / soil & before using them, you must sieve them in a thin cloth like Dupatta for separating the soil.

Allah Said in Quran :

"Then, if he (the dying person) be of the Muqarrabeen (those brought near to Allah), there is for him rest and provision, and a Garden of Delights (Paradise).
(Surah Waq'eah : 88, 89)

And He Said :

"And in addition the corn, with (its) leaves and stalks for fodder and sweet-scented plants".
(Surah Rahman : 12)

Muslim narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:

"Whoever is presented with Rayhan should not refuse it, because it is easy to wear and has a good scent".

Ibn Majah narrated in his Sunan that Usamah Radi Allaho Anh related from Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam that he said:

"Is there any blessing like Paradise, for Paradise is all good and pure. It is by the Lord of the Ka’bah, a shinning light, a twinkling Rayhan, a luxurious palace, a running river, a ripe date, and a beautiful, pretty wife. It has many suits, eternal residence in a good place of dwelling, fruits, vegetables, comfort and bounty in an exalted, comfortable dwelling. They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, we are ready for it. He said, Say, by Allah’s Leave. They said, By Allah’s Leave".

Every plant that has a good scent is called Rayhan. Therefore, every area gives a certain plant that name. For instance, the people to the west (Morocco), as well as the Arabs call the aromatic plants Rayhan. The people in Iraq and Sham call the Hibq (a type of mint) a Rayhan.

Rayhan or myrtle is cold in the first degree and dry in the second degree. Yet, it is a compound of several qualities, most of which consist of earthly cold essence. Myrtle consists of a soft hot substance. Myrtle dries the head nicely and is effective as a constipating agent.

Myrtle prevents bile diarrhea and dissipates hot and wet vapor when one smells its scent, the fragrance brings relief to the heart and prevents various ailments, especially when the plant is spread around the house.

Furthermore, myrtle heals the tumors that occur in the two ureters (muscular tubes that propel urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder) when it is coated on them. When fresh myrtle leaves are ground, blended with vinegar, and then placed on the head, they will stop nose bleeding. When dried myrtle leaves are crushed and the powder is sprinkled on wet ulcers, it will heal them and will help weak organs when used as a bandage, relieve septic finger and will heal spots and the ulcers on the hands and feet.

When myrtle is used to rub the body, it eliminates sweat, dries the excess wetness and dissipates underarm odor. When one sits in the water that myrtle was cooked in, it will help against infections on the buttocks and vagina and will heal weak joints and broken bones (when it is poured on the wound).

In addition, myrtle helps eliminate dandruff, the wet ulcers and spots that appear on the head. It also helps the hairs against falling and gives them a black color. When myrtle leaves are ground with a little water and then blended with some oil or rose grease, and then used as a bandage, it will be suitable against fresh (or humid) ulcers, canker sores, Erysipelas (acute, bacterial skin infection resulting in inflammation), acute tumors, Urticaria (hives) and Hemorrhoids.

Rayhan helps against Hemoptysis (spitting up blood as seen in Tuberculosis) of the chest and lungs. It cools the stomach, does not harm the chest or the stomach and cleanses them, it helps against diarrhea and coughing, and this is a special quality for Rayhan that is rarely found in other medications. Myrtle seeds help urine production (they are a safe diuretic) and heal urinary bladder infections, spider bites and scorpion stings. Using Rayhan roots to clean between the teeth is harmful though.

Persian Rayhan, which is Hibq is hot, and when its scent is smelled, it helps against hot headaches when water is sprinkled on the Hibq and then is allowed to cool down, it is said that this kind of myrtle is cold, but it looks like it has all of the four types of temperaments (dry, wet, hot and cold). It also helps bring sleep to the eyes. The seeds of Persian myrtle relieve diarrhea of the bile, stomach, strengthen the heart and help against black bile ailments.

Healing by Utrujj - Citron

Healing Through Prophetic Medicine in Islam

Healing by Food

Utrujj (Citron)

In the Sahih, it is narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:

"The example of the believer who reads Quran is the example of the Utrujj (Citron), its taste is delicious and its scent is pleasant".

Utrujj has many benefits. There are four elements in the Utrujj, the peel, heart (or pulp), the pith and the seed. Each of these four elements has its own tendency. Peels (skin) for instance, are hot and dry, while the pulp is hot and wet. The Utrujj pith (sourness / acidity) is cold and dry, while its seed is hot and dry.

The peel of Utrujj has many benefits. When it is placed within the clothes, it prevents molding. The peel’s scent refreshes decaying and polluted air. The peels of the Utrujj also improve the flavor of the foods and dissipate foul scents. Also, when the peels are mixed with other foods, they help the digestive process. The author of Al-Qanoon (Ibn-e-Seena) said, The pith of Utrujj is beneficial in cases of snake bite, while the peels are used in bandages for snakebite. The ashes of peels are used as an effective ointment against leprosy.

The pulp of Citron (Utrujj) soothes the heat of the stomach, helps those who suffer from bile and subdues hot vapors. Al-Ghafiqi said, "Eating the (citron) pulp relieves hemorrhoids".

The extract of pith contained in the citron constipates & relieves bile, soothes hot pulsation, controls bilious vomiting, and when taken as a drink or Kohl relieves jaundice. The extract of pith is also a good appetite stimulant, constipates and helps in cases of bilious diarrhea. The citron pith extract also soothes the lust of woman and relieves and combats skin spots when used as a lubricant. It in addition cures herpes. The proof of pith’s effectiveness against ink is that when it touches the ink on the clothes, it effectively removes the stains. The pith contained in Utrujj also soothes and has a chilling effect, cools the hotness of liver, strengthens the stomach, eliminates bile and the accompanying depression, it also quenches the thirst.

The seeds of Utrujj have a decomposing and drying effect. Ibn Masawaih said about Utrujj, "When the skin of its seed is removed and cooked and taken as a drink with warm water, it will help against deadly poisons when one drinks as much as two measures; each around twenty five grams. When the seeds are ground and placed on a sting, they help. The seeds constipate and add good scent to the taste. Most of these benefits are also present in its pulp".

Furthermore, it was said that, "The seeds help against scorpion stings when two measures of it are taken with warm water, and when it is ground and placed on the affected area". It was also reported that its seeds help against all types of poisons and all types of venomous stings.

One of the Persian rulers was angry with his doctors and that he ordered them to be jailed. He gave them the choice to have only one type of food and they chose the Utrujj. They were asked, "Why did you choose it in particular"? They said, "Because it turns into a type of perfume shortly, its sight is pleasant, its peel smells good, its pulp is a fruit, its pith is a food, its seeds are an antidote and it contains fat".

Truly, such a beneficial substance deserves to be compared with the best of creation, meaning the believer (Muslim) who recites the Quran. We should mention that some of our Salaf used to like looking at the Utrujj because its sight is pleasant and comforting.

Many people think that Citron is the ORANGE or LEMON but it is not correct, although Citron belongs to Citrus family, but it is a unique fruit with features of its own as explained above.

Ruqyah for scorpion's sting

Healing Through Prophetic Medicine in Islam

Healing by Deeds

Prophet’s Guidance on treating pain in general with Islamic Prayer formulas

Prophet’s Guidance on treating Scorpion stings

Narrated by Tirmizi, that Abdullah Bin Masood Radi Allaho Anh reported that once, Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam was praying and when he was in Sajdah, a scorpion suddenly stung him on the finger, when the beloved Prophet finished his prayer, he said "May Allah Put His Curse on the scorpion, as it never leaves even the Prophets or others. Then he asked for a pot filled with water; in which some salt was also added, Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam was dipping his finger (stung by the scorpion) in that salted water, & he was reciting Surah Ikhlaas & Muawwazatain & blowing on his finger till the pain was all gone".

The above Hadith covers the aspect of a compound medicine (mixture), including both the spiritual cure (by Ikhlaas & Muawwazatain) and the natural cure by salted water.

The chapter Al-Ikhlaas contains the essentials of the Faith and the Creed, various aspects of Tawheed, and attesting to and affirming Allah’s Oneness that entails denying all types and forms of shirk with Him. It entails affirming that Allah is the Sustainer, along with asserting every type of perfection for Him. Consequently, the creation seeks Allah for each and every need. This chapter denies that Allah has a parent, an offspring, or an equal, and this is why it equals one third of the Quran. Furthermore, Allah's Name "As-Samad (The Sustainer)” that the chapter contains includes each and every type of perfection. Furthermore, the chapter denies that Allah Has anyone equal to HIM, while Allah’s Name Al-Ahad (The One) denies the existence of a partner with Allah. These are the three essential corner-stones of Tawheed [Allah’s Oneness in Lordship and worship and in His Names and Attributes].

The Mu’awwazatain (chapters 113 and 114 of the Quran) include seeking refuge with Allah from every type of evil and harm. Seeking refuge from the evil that Allah Has Created includes every type of evil that such creations, whether physical or spiritual, can ever produce and cause. Seeking refuge from the night when its sign, (the moon) sets entails seeking refuge from the evil souls that thrive during the night, as opposed to the light of the day. This is because when the darkness falls and the moon sets, the evil forces come out. Seeking refuge from those who tie knots and blow on them includes seeking refuge from the evil of SAHIR ~ sorcerers and their sorcery. In addition, seeking refuge from envious people means seeking refuge from the evil forces that cause harm through the envious people's bodies and sight. The second chapter (114) of the Muawwazatain entails seeking refuge from the evil of humans and Jinn. Consequently, the two Muawwazatain entail seeking refuge from every type of evil. Therefore, they have a great benefit as a shield against evil before it occurs. This is why the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) advised Uqbah bin Amir Radi Allaho Anh to recite them after every prayer, as Tirmizi has narrated. This advice from our beloved Prophet (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) contains a great secret and benefit that helps repulse all types of evil during the time between prayers. Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) described the Muawwazatain when he said:

"No one who seeks refuge can ever find a refuge like them".

It was reported that when Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam was the victim of SEHR ~ sorcery, the spell contained eleven knots tied each with a special incantation blown on it, and that whenever angel Jibreel recited a Verse from the Muawwazatain, a knot was untied, until all eleven knots were untied. Then, Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam was cured, as if being released from a restraining chain.

As for using regular medicines to cure scorpion sting, salt has a great value in this regard. The author of Al-Qanoon (Ibn-e-Seena said, Salt should be used in a bandage with linen seeds to cure the scorpion's sting. Salt helps dissolve the poison, which has a burning pain that needs to be cooled. The cool moisture contained in the linen seed cools the pain, while the salt helps extract and remove the poison. This is one of the best and easiest types of remedies for scorpion stings, which requires cooling the pain and extracting the venom. Allah Knows best.

Muslim narrated that Abu Hurayrah Radi Allaho Anh said, "A man came to Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam and said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, I have suffered greatly from a scorpion that stung me last night” Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallaam) said: "Had you said these words when you went to sleep, "I seek refuge with Allah’s Perfect Words from the evil of what He Has Created, it would not have harmed you". [Ahmad]

Divine cures help after one catches a disease and help prevent if from happening. If any type of harm befalls one afterwards, it will not be severe. Natural medicines, on the other hand, only help after the disease attacks. Islamic prayer formulas and the various supplications either prevent the disease from happening or make it milder after it happens, depending on the strength of soul and heart of the sick person. Therefore, the Islamic prayer formulas and supplications are used as preventive measures and addition as a cure.

As for prevention, in the Sahihain it is narrated that Aishah Radi Allaho Anha said

"Whenever the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) would go to bed, he used to breathe into his hands with Qul Huwa-Allahu Ahad (Al- Ikhlaas) and the Muawwazatain. He then would wipe his face and whatever he could reach of his body with his hands".

In the Sahihain, it is also narrated that Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) said: "Whoever reads the last two Verses from Chapter Al-Baqarah (second chapter in the Quran) at night, they will be enough for him".

In addition, Muslim narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said: Whoever resided in a place and said, "I seek refuge with Allah's Perfect Words from the evil of what He Has Created", then nothing will harm him until he departs that place".

Abu Dawood narrated that the Messenger of Allah Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam used to say at night when he was traveling:

"O land! My Lord and your Lord is Allah. I seek refuge with Allah from your evil, from the evil of whatever is in you and from the evil of whatever walks on your surface. I seek refuge with Allah from a lion, a despot (or jinn), a snake and a scorpion and from those who reside in this land, and from the begetter (son of Adam) and that which he begot.”

As for the second benefit of Ruqyah, providing a cure, we mentioned healing the ill person by reciting the Al-Fatihah and reciting the Ruqyah to cure scorpion stings.

Muslim [lbn Majah, Ahmad and Al-Tabarani} narrated in his Sahih that Uthman bin Abu Al-Aa's Radi Allaho Anh complained to Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam from a pain in his body that he suffered from ever since he became a Muslim. Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:

Place your hand on the painful area of your body & say Bismillah (In the Name of Allah), thrice. Then say seven times,

"I seek refuge with Allah’s Might and Power from the evil of what I am suffering from, and because of which I have become worry."

The remedy mentioned here entails reciting Allah’s Name, relating all matters to Him and seeking refuge with His Might and Power from the pain, and will surely eradicate the pain. In addition, repeating the supplication contained in the remedy frequently will make it even more effective and successful just as the case when the medication is frequently administered until the disease is fully eradicated.

In the Sahihain, it is narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam used to visit some of his family members (who were ill) and would touch them with his right hand, saying :

“O Allah, the Lord of mankind, Do away with the complaint and Bring about the cure. You Alone Bring the cure, and there is no cure except Your cure, a cure that does not leave illnesses.”

The last Islamic prayer formula includes begging Allah by His Perfect Lordship and Mercy to bring about the cure. The Islamic prayer formula affirms that Allah is the only One Who Brings the cure and that there is no cure except the cure that He brings about. The Islamic prayer formula includes begging Allah by His Oneness, Kindness and Lordship.
