Treating Pimples

Prophet's Guidance on treating Pimples

Ibn As-Sunni said in his book that one of the wives of Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said "Once the Messenger of Allah came by when I had a pimple on my finger, he saw it & asked:

"Do you have a Tharirah (arum or sweet Flag), I said, Yes". He said, "Place it on the pimple. He then said, Say, O Allah who Transforms the big to small and the small to big, make what I am suffering from small".

Tharirah (Arum) is an Indian remedy made of arum cane. Arum is hot and dry and helps against stomach and liver tumors, dropsy and it strengthens the heart as well.

In the Sahihain, it is narrated that Aishah Radi Allaho Anha said "I perfumed the Messenger of Allah with my hands using Tharirah (Arum) during the farewell Hajj and while the state of Ihram and otherwise.

The pimple is a growth that results from hot harmful, septic substances that push towards the skin so as to find a way out of the body. The pimple needs to mature and to then be opened and extracted, such as by using the Tharirah, which helps extract the septic matter from the pimple, along with giving a good aroma. Tharirah soothes the hotness of the pimple. This is why the author of Al-Qanoon said, "There is no better remedy for the burns than the Tharirah, when it is blended with rose essence and vinegar.

Misk ~ Musk ~ Kastoori

Narrated by Sahih Muslim, Abu Said Al-Khudri Radi Allaho Anh reported that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said: “The best type of perfume is Musk”.

In the Sahihain, it is narrated that Aishah Radi Allaho Anha said that she used to anoint Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam with a perfume containing Musk before assuming Ihram, on the Day of the Sacrifice and before performing Tawaaf around the Sacred House (Ka’bah).

Musk is the king of all perfumes, it has the best aroma. Other types of perfumes are usually compared to Musk, but Musk is never compared to them. In addition, the hills and sands of Paradise are made of Musk.

Musk is a hot, dry substance of the second degree, and it brings comfort and joy to the hearts and strengthens the inner organs when it is drunk or smelled. Musk brings strength and comfort to the external organs when anointed with it. Musk is beneficial for old people and for those who have excessive skin moisture; especially during winter, and helps against fainting, shaking and the general weakness in the body as it excites the instinctive heat. Musk clears the white part in the eye and dries excess moisture in it, and dissipates swelling in various organs. Musk works as an antidote for some poisons, and helps against snakebite. It has many other benefits.

Oud / Aluwwah (Indian Aloe Tree)

The Indian Aloe (Oud) comes in two types. One type is used for medicinal purposes which is called Qust-al-Bahri. The second type of Oud is called Aluwwah, aloe wood, which is used as a perfume.

Muslim narrated in his Sahih that lbn Umar Radi Allaho Anh used to burn dry aloe wood along with some Kafoor (camphor) and stated that it was the way of fumigation adopted by the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam). Also, the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) has described the bounties that the people of Paradise will be enjoying, such as having the aloe wood.

The Aluwwah (Oud) is hot and dry in the third degree, opens the clogs and removes gas from the stomach. Oud dries unnecessary moisture while strengthening the intestines and brings relief and comfort to the heart. Oud also helps the mind, sharpens the senses, constipates and helps relieve the Enuresis (bed wetting that results from coldness of the prostate).

Ibn Samjun said, "There are several kinds of Oud, and they all carry the general name of Aluwwah, Oud is used both for internal & external applications (of the body) and is burnt alone or with other substances. There is a medicinal significance that when Oud is mixed with Kafoor (camphor), each of them makes the other milder. Furthermore, burning the Oud cleanses the air which is one of the six necessary elements for the body's well-being.

Siwaak / Miswaak

In the Sahihain, it is narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said : “If it was not for the fact that my nation would not be able to bear it, I would have ordered them to use Siwaak before every prayer”.

In addition, in the Sahihain, it is also narrated that: “Whenever Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam would wake up at night, he would clean his mouth with Siwaak”.

Bukhari narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said : “Siwaak cleanses the mouth and pleasures the LORD (Allah)”.

Sahih Muslim narrated that whenever Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam would enter his house, he would first use the Siwaak”.

An authentic Hadith narrated that before he died, Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam used the Siwaak. Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said: “I have troubled you by frequently stressing using the Siwaak”.

The best type of Siwaak is made from Arak trees. Furthermore, one should not use an unknown tree for Siwaak for it might be poisonous. Siwaak should be used moderately, because it might cause the coating of teeth to wear away and thus the teeth will be susceptible to hot vapors or gasses that ascend from the stomach and to all kinds of dirt. When Siwaak is used moderately, it will polish the teeth, strengthen the roots of teeth, help the tongue, prevent plaque, perfume the breath, clear the mind and strengthen the appetite.

The best way to use Siwaak is by soaking it in rose water. In addition, a good quality of Siwaak is also made from the roots of walnut tree. The author of At-Tayseer said, “It was said that when a person uses Walnut's root Siwaak once every five days, it will clear the head, sharpen the senses and alert the mind”.

Siwaak is beneficial for many reasons, such as perfuming the breath, strengthening the gingiva, clearing the phlegm and the sight and preventing cavities. It preserves the health of the stomach, clears the voice, helps the digestion process, helps make the speech clear and encourages one to recite the Quran, remember Allah and pray. Siwaak fights sleepiness, pleases the Lord, delights the angels and increases the number of the good deeds.

Siwaak is preferred at any time, especially before the prayer, ablution, when waking up and when the mouth emits foul odor, It is preferred for those who are fasting and all other people at all times. There are Ahadith that allow this practice for those who are fasting, because it is beneficial for them and it pleases the Lord. Pleasing the Lord when one is fasting is even more desired than at other times. Siwaak cleans the mouth, and cleanliness for the fasting person is one of his best deeds.

In the Sunan, it is narrated that Amir bin Rabi’ah said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) on numerous occasions using the Siwaak while he was fasting”.

Bukhari narrated that Ibn Umar Radi Allaho Anh said that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam used the Siwaak at the two ends of the day.

There is a consensus that the fasting person rinses his mouth while performing ablution, and rinsing the mouth is an obligation or a more preferred act than using the Siwaak. Allah Does not have a use for the people to worship him while their mouths are emitting foul odor, nor is it an act of worship. When Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam mentioned that the odor (of the mouth) which a fasting person emits is better in Allah’s Sight than the scent of Musk, he meant to encourage the practice of fasting, and not the practice of allowing the mouth to emit foul odor. Hence, the fasting person needs the Siwaak more than anyone else.

Using Siwaak does not prevent the good scent that Allah Creates in a fasting person’s mouth on the Day of Resurrection. Rather, the mouth of the fasting person will smell better than Musk on the Day of Qiyamah (Resurrection) as a sign of his observing the Fast, even if the Siwaak removed the odor that used to come from his mouth. Similarly, whoever suffers a wound (for the sake of Allah) in this life is commanded to remove / clean the blood from his wound in this life, but his wound would still have the color of blood on the Day of Resurrection.

Furthermore, Siwaak does not completely removes the odor of mouth (for the fasting person) because its reason still remains, that is, the stomach being empty of food. Only the effect of this fact will be lessened from the teeth and gums.

Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam taught his Ummah (nation) the preferred and the disliked acts of the Fast. He did not mention the Siwaak among the disliked acts although he knew that his Sahabah (companions) were using it. Rather, he encouraged them in general to use the Siwaak and they saw him using it himself at innumerable occassions, knowing that they could imitate him. Never did he discourage them from using Siwaak in the afternoon (when they were fasting).

Kabath (Arak Tree Fruit)

In the Sahihain, it is narrated that Jabir bin Abdullah Radi Allaho Anh said, “We were with the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) collecting Kabath when he said, collect the black colored Kabath because it is the best type.”

Kabath is the fruit that grows on the plant called Arak which grows in the area of Hejaz and whose branches are used for Siwaak. It is hot and dry and carries the same benefits as the Arak tree. It is beneficial for strengthening the stomach, helping the digestion, dissolving phlegm and relieving back pain and several other illnesses. Ibn Juljul said, “Drinking its soup produces urine as a diuretic, and cleanses the bladder & prostate”. In addition, Ibn Radhwan said, “The Kabath strengthens the stomach and constipates (mildly)”.

Allah Said in Quran :

"Then, if he (the dying person) be of the Muqarrabeen (those brought near to Allah), there is for him rest and provision, and a Garden of Delights (Paradise).
(Surah Waq'eah : 88, 89)

And He Said :

"And in addition the corn, with (its) leaves and stalks for fodder and sweet-scented plants".
(Surah Rahman : 12)

Muslim narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:

"Whoever is presented with Rayhan should not refuse it, because it is easy to wear and has a good scent".

Ibn Majah narrated in his Sunan that Usamah Radi Allaho Anh related from Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam that he said:

"Is there any blessing like Paradise, for Paradise is all good and pure. It is by the Lord of the Ka’bah, a shinning light, a twinkling Rayhan, a luxurious palace, a running river, a ripe date, and a beautiful, pretty wife. It has many suits, eternal residence in a good place of dwelling, fruits, vegetables, comfort and bounty in an exalted, comfortable dwelling. They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, we are ready for it. He said, Say, by Allah’s Leave. They said, By Allah’s Leave".

Every plant that has a good scent is called Rayhan. Therefore, every area gives a certain plant that name. For instance, the people to the west (Morocco), as well as the Arabs call the aromatic plants Rayhan. The people in Iraq and Sham call the Hibq (a type of mint) a Rayhan.

Rayhan or myrtle is cold in the first degree and dry in the second degree. Yet, it is a compound of several qualities, most of which consist of earthly cold essence. Myrtle consists of a soft hot substance. Myrtle dries the head nicely and is effective as a constipating agent.

Myrtle prevents bile diarrhea and dissipates hot and wet vapor when one smells its scent, the fragrance brings relief to the heart and prevents various ailments, especially when the plant is spread around the house.

Furthermore, myrtle heals the tumors that occur in the two ureters (muscular tubes that propel urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder) when it is coated on them. When fresh myrtle leaves are ground, blended with vinegar, and then placed on the head, they will stop nose bleeding. When dried myrtle leaves are crushed and the powder is sprinkled on wet ulcers, it will heal them and will help weak organs when used as a bandage, relieve septic finger and will heal spots and the ulcers on the hands and feet.

When myrtle is used to rub the body, it eliminates sweat, dries the excess wetness and dissipates underarm odor. When one sits in the water that myrtle was cooked in, it will help against infections on the buttocks and vagina and will heal weak joints and broken bones (when it is poured on the wound).

In addition, myrtle helps eliminate dandruff, the wet ulcers and spots that appear on the head. It also helps the hairs against falling and gives them a black color. When myrtle leaves are ground with a little water and then blended with some oil or rose grease, and then used as a bandage, it will be suitable against fresh (or humid) ulcers, canker sores, Erysipelas (acute, bacterial skin infection resulting in inflammation), acute tumors, Urticaria (hives) and Hemorrhoids.

Rayhan helps against Hemoptysis (spitting up blood as seen in Tuberculosis) of the chest and lungs. It cools the stomach, does not harm the chest or the stomach and cleanses them, it helps against diarrhea and coughing, and this is a special quality for Rayhan that is rarely found in other medications. Myrtle seeds help urine production (they are a safe diuretic) and heal urinary bladder infections, spider bites and scorpion stings. Using Rayhan roots to clean between the teeth is harmful though.

Persian Rayhan, which is Hibq is hot, and when its scent is smelled, it helps against hot headaches when water is sprinkled on the Hibq and then is allowed to cool down, it is said that this kind of myrtle is cold, but it looks like it has all of the four types of temperaments (dry, wet, hot and cold). It also helps bring sleep to the eyes. The seeds of Persian myrtle relieve diarrhea of the bile, stomach, strengthen the heart and help against black bile ailments.

Healing by Herbs - Henna

Healing Through Prophetic Medicine in Islam

Healing by Herbs

Henna

Narrated by Ibn Majah that whenever Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam suffered from a headache,he used to cover his head with Henna (Khazaab) and said, "Henna helps to relieve headache by the permission of Allah".

Headaches could be relieved by vomiting, eating, being calm and idle, using cold rags, cooling the body, elevating the temperature, avoiding noise, etc. Knowing these facts, we should mention that treating headaches with Henna is partial and that it treats some types of headache, if the headache is caused by high fever and not by a spoiled substance that requires extraction. Crushed Henna blended with vinegar and applied to the forehead will relieve the headache. Henna soothes the nerves when used as a bandage. Finally, Henna is not only favorable to relieve headaches, but in addition for the various organs of the body and for the hot tumors and inflammations when used as a bandage.

Ali Bin Abi Rafe'e reported on behalf of his grandfather Salma Radi Allaho Anh (servant of Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam): "If someone complained to Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam for headache, our beloved Prophet asked him for Hijamah & if someone complained for pain in his legs, Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam asked him to anoint with HENNA". (Abu Dawood)
He also reports "Whenever Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam suffered with injury or thorn piercing, the wound was only treated with Henna". (Tirmizi)

Henna is cold in the first degree and dry in the second degree

The Henna tree has two special qualities:

1. Decomposing due to its warm watery essence

2. Constipating due to the cold earthly essence it contains.

Henna in useful in treating burns and soothes the nerves when used as a bandage, as we have stated. When chewed; Henna helps treat the cankers and thrush that appear in the mouth. Henna heals Stomatitis (inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth) that appears in child's mouth. Using Henna to bandage hot tumors helps, and it has a similar effect on open sores (similar to Dragon's blood tree). When Henna is blended with pure wax and rose oil, it will help against the aches of the side (That ul Janb ~ Pleurisy).

When the symptoms of smallpox start to break out on children; and Henna is then applied on the bottom of their feet, the eyes will be immune from the sores that accompany smallpox. When the flower of Henna is placed between wool clothes, it will perfume it and will prevent mold or mite. Furthermore, when the leaves of Henna are submerged in fresh water, then squeezed and drunk for forty days, 20 measures each day with 10 measures of sugar or honey while eating the meat of a young eve (goat), it prevents LEPROSY with its amazing qualities.

Ibn Al Qayyam wrote about a man who complained from fissuring in his fingers and that he offered monetary rewards to whoever could cure him, but to no avail. Later on, a woman prescribed for him a drink of Henna for ten days but he could not understand the idea. Later on, he soaked Henna leaves in water and drank the water and his fingers were healed and regained their beauty.

Henna when used as an ointment for the fingers, polishes and strengthens them. Henna is useful when blended with butter and then used as a bandage for the hot tumors that drain yellow residue. Henna also benefits against chronic mange, helps the hair grow, makes it stronger and strengthens the head & brain. Finally, Henna helps against the blisters and the pustules that appear on the legs and feet and the rest of the body in general.

Reported by Abu Hurairah Radi Allaho Anh that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said "Jews & Chiristians do not dye their hairs, so oppose them by applying the color (HENNA)."

Hennas was loved by Khulafa'-e-Rashideen, Abu Bakr & Umar Radi Allaho Anhuma.

Reported by Anas Radi Allaho Anh "Abu Bakr Radi Allaho Anh used to color his hairs by HENNA & KATAM, & Umar Radi Allaho Anh used to dye only with HENNA".

Imam Muhammad Ahmed Zahabi says that there are three essential factors for healing :

1. Expulsion of fluids from the wounds

2. Cessation of production (of any more fluids)

3. Formation of healthy flesh (tissue granulation) to fill the gap created in the wound

Henna contains all these three factors and possesses very good healing properties.

Faghiyah (Henna Blossom)

Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi, on the authority of Abdullah Bin Buraidah's father "The best of perfumes in this world & the hereafter is Faghiyah". Furthermore, narrated by Al-Bayhaqi on the authority of Anas Bin Malik Radi Alaho Anh that he said, "The best perfumed loved by Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam was Faghiyah". But we are not sure if these Hadith are authentic or not.

Faghiyah which is Henna blossom, is one of the best kinds of perfumes, Faghiyah is mild in its hotness and dryness, and constipates mildly. When Faghiyah is placed between folded wool clothes, it protects them from mold and mites. Faghiyah is used in ointments against facial paralysis and Aneurysm (an abnormal widening or ballooning of a portion of an artery due to weakness in the wall of the blood vessel), while its oil helps the organs and relaxes the nerves.

Healing by Jubn ~ Cheese

Healing Through Prophetic Medicine in Islam

Healing by Food

Jubn ~Cheese

In the Sunan of Abu Dawood, it is narrated that Abdullah Bin Umar Radi Allaho Anhuma (May Allah be Pleased with him and his father) said that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam was brought some cheese while in the area of TABUK and that he asked for a knife, mentioned Allah's Name and then cut it. Also, the Sahabah (companions of Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) used to eat cheese in Iraq & Shaam (Greater Syria) areas.

Un-salted cheese is good for the stomach, easy on the body organs, produces flesh and relaxes the stomach. Salted cheese, on the other hand, is less nutritious and is bad for the stomach and intestines. Old and grilled cheese heats the stomach and is beneficial in cases of ulcers and diarrhea.

Cheese is cold and wet and is better when it is grilled because the fire makes it milder, softer, and better tasting with a pleasant scent. Old salted cheese is hot and dry, and boiling also makes it softer and less sour, because the fire extracts the hot residue from the cheese. Salted cheese makes the body weak and causes stones in the liver & urinary bladder / prostate. It is also bad for the stomach, and mixing it with some other soothing ingredients (what people think will probably make it milder) is even worse, because these substances allow the cheese an easy access to the stomach, making its job easier to spoil the digestion power.

Healing by Utrujj - Citron

Healing Through Prophetic Medicine in Islam

Healing by Food

Utrujj (Citron)

In the Sahih, it is narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:

"The example of the believer who reads Quran is the example of the Utrujj (Citron), its taste is delicious and its scent is pleasant".

Utrujj has many benefits. There are four elements in the Utrujj, the peel, heart (or pulp), the pith and the seed. Each of these four elements has its own tendency. Peels (skin) for instance, are hot and dry, while the pulp is hot and wet. The Utrujj pith (sourness / acidity) is cold and dry, while its seed is hot and dry.

The peel of Utrujj has many benefits. When it is placed within the clothes, it prevents molding. The peel’s scent refreshes decaying and polluted air. The peels of the Utrujj also improve the flavor of the foods and dissipate foul scents. Also, when the peels are mixed with other foods, they help the digestive process. The author of Al-Qanoon (Ibn-e-Seena) said, The pith of Utrujj is beneficial in cases of snake bite, while the peels are used in bandages for snakebite. The ashes of peels are used as an effective ointment against leprosy.

The pulp of Citron (Utrujj) soothes the heat of the stomach, helps those who suffer from bile and subdues hot vapors. Al-Ghafiqi said, "Eating the (citron) pulp relieves hemorrhoids".

The extract of pith contained in the citron constipates & relieves bile, soothes hot pulsation, controls bilious vomiting, and when taken as a drink or Kohl relieves jaundice. The extract of pith is also a good appetite stimulant, constipates and helps in cases of bilious diarrhea. The citron pith extract also soothes the lust of woman and relieves and combats skin spots when used as a lubricant. It in addition cures herpes. The proof of pith’s effectiveness against ink is that when it touches the ink on the clothes, it effectively removes the stains. The pith contained in Utrujj also soothes and has a chilling effect, cools the hotness of liver, strengthens the stomach, eliminates bile and the accompanying depression, it also quenches the thirst.

The seeds of Utrujj have a decomposing and drying effect. Ibn Masawaih said about Utrujj, "When the skin of its seed is removed and cooked and taken as a drink with warm water, it will help against deadly poisons when one drinks as much as two measures; each around twenty five grams. When the seeds are ground and placed on a sting, they help. The seeds constipate and add good scent to the taste. Most of these benefits are also present in its pulp".

Furthermore, it was said that, "The seeds help against scorpion stings when two measures of it are taken with warm water, and when it is ground and placed on the affected area". It was also reported that its seeds help against all types of poisons and all types of venomous stings.

One of the Persian rulers was angry with his doctors and that he ordered them to be jailed. He gave them the choice to have only one type of food and they chose the Utrujj. They were asked, "Why did you choose it in particular"? They said, "Because it turns into a type of perfume shortly, its sight is pleasant, its peel smells good, its pulp is a fruit, its pith is a food, its seeds are an antidote and it contains fat".

Truly, such a beneficial substance deserves to be compared with the best of creation, meaning the believer (Muslim) who recites the Quran. We should mention that some of our Salaf used to like looking at the Utrujj because its sight is pleasant and comforting.

Many people think that Citron is the ORANGE or LEMON but it is not correct, although Citron belongs to Citrus family, but it is a unique fruit with features of its own as explained above.
