Remember,
Thomas Carlyle uttered these words, and many more to a shocked and
bewildered Christianaudience in England, a hundred
and fifty years ago. History did not record for us the lively
arguments anddebates
which his lecture must naturally have caused. He kept to his
promise: "I mean to say all the
goodof
him (his Hero Prophet)I
justly can'" and he went on in
his talk to I defend Muhammad (pbuh) against thefalse charges, slander and
calumnies of his enemies:
I may furnish just
one incident from the life of the Prophet. An incidence which
reflects thehighest
degree of his sincerity in recording a Revelation in the Noble
Qur’ân even if it seems to
reprove him forsome
natural and human zeal.
It
was in the early days of his mission in Makkah. Muhammad (pbuh) was
deeply engrossed in trying to weanthe leaders of the pagan Quraish
to his teachings. Apparently one of them was giving him an attentivehearing when a poor blind man by
the name of Abdullah lbn Umm-l- Maktum tried to barge in into thediscussion and wanting to draw
attention to himself. The blessed Prophet said nothing, but perhaps a
thought wentthrough
his mind (why don't you have a little patience, can't you see (sense)
that because of your impatience Imight lose these customers). I
believe that lesser men, sinners and saints, will not be questioned
for suchlapses,
but not so for Muhammad (pbuh). Did not God choose him and honour
him with that lofty status asrecorded?
And
Most Certainly Thou (O Muhammad) Are of Most sublime And Exalted
Character.
To
emphasize the importance of this matterI wantto make itverycleartoyouthatcertainaspectsofProphet Muhammad'snobleSeerahdoappeartobeconflicting. Theambiguitythatsuchconflictingactionscreatecan however, onlybe removed if weareclearas to Prophet's life
missionandobjective.
The enemiesof Islamespecially theOrientalistshaveleveledcriticismandmade accusationsonthis(apparent)contrast.OftheseIshall givea fewexamples. In MakkahtheProphet(SAW) and his Companions
(RAA) were brutallypersecuted; his
companionsweremadeto liedownon fierycoals;some weredraggedlikeanimalcarcasses, withropestied aroundtheirnecksacrossthe rockyandsun-baked terrain of Makkah.
A believing ladywasmartyred notonlyina mostsavagebutalsoa
mostvulgarmanner.Oneofthe believers wasboundby his handsandfeet to fourcamels whichwerethendrivenin fourseparatedirections so that his bodywas
rentto pieces. Despiteall this, retaliation was forbidden.FortwelveyearsinMakkahnoneofthe devotedCompanions(RAA)oftheProphet(SAW) retaliatedagainsttheMushrikeen of Makkahnorexacted revengefromthem.ThiswassobecausetheProphet (SAW) hadordered
themto keeptheirhandsfolded(with restraint). Therewasabsolutely noretaliation atall. This happeneddespitethe fact that, the worthygentlemen who hadembraced the newfaith in Makkahwereeach equalto a hundredmen,if not a thousand, in termsof
courageand valour.Andthey numbered a hundred or so then. Yet they didnotreactevenin self-defence therebyadheringto the Prophet'sorder:"Holdbackyourhandsfromfight".
This is oneendof an extremeandat
theotherendduringthe Madiniteera(theperiodinMadina) theProphet(SAW) can be seenwiththe swordandstandard in his hand. His faithfulCompanions,MayAllah(SWT) be pleasedwith themall, can be seen armedwithswords, spears, bowsand arrows.Notonlyisretaliatoryactionbeingtakenbut moreover,asIhaveexplainedindetailinmyrepeated lecturesonthetopic"Manhaj-e-Inqilab-e-Nabawi"(The MethodologyoftheProphet(SAW)foranIslamic Revolution), it wasthe Prophet(SAW) who initiatedaction after
migrating to Madina.
In this background
consider the criticisms leveledagainstIslamandtheMuslims during the last two
centuries. Whennot only the
sub-continent but a
largepartof theMuslimworldwasin
the politicaland militaryclutchesof WesternImperialism, andmostof the MuslimcountrieswereundertheyokeofoneWestern poweror another,Islamcameunderseverecriticism from mostof therulingnations.ItwassaidthatIslamwasa violentreligion, andtheMuslims a bloodthirstylot. And thatIslamwasspreadby thesword. To quote, “A people whoseeverylegendandagereeksof bloodonhistory's fairpage".The foreigninvaders hurledtheseaccusations at uswithsuchferocitythateventheLateAllamaShibli Naumani, areligious scholar, biographeroftheProphet Muhammad (SAW) and historian of greatstature, adopted anapologeticstanceandinhisfirstvolumeofthe Prophet'sbiographywrotethattheProphetMuhammad (SAW) andhisCompanions(RAA) didnotinitiateaction nordidtheyfirsttakeuparmsandthatin fact theyonly didso to defendthemselves. The Late AllamaShibli can be excusedinthismatterbecausehewaslivinginatime whentheEnglishruledanddominatedtheentireregion.
ButIwasshockedanddisappointedto heara statement madeinourindependentcountryofPakistanbya renownedIslamicscholaraffiliatedwitha religiousparty, andthis has cometo my knowledgefromreliablesources, that"inIslamthereis noconceptof a war(or courseof action)withaggressivedesignsbutonlythatof a war(or courseof action)in self-defense.
Allthebattlesthattook placein Prophet'seraandinthoseof therightlyguided caliphs(RAA) weredefensivein nature."
Nowthatwehavetouchedthisissuein ourdiscussionI wanttoclearlystateanimportantandfundamentalfact thatit is alwaysthe leaderof the revoltwho sows the seeds
of confrontation that follows. Just think about howthe Messengerof AllahMuhammad(SAW) beganhiscallto thefaith!Heinvitedpeopleto believeintheOnenessof Godandopenlydeclared"O'people!Say thatthereis no godbutAllahandattain(everlasting) success".Consider carefullythe
latentaspectsandfull importand meaningof thisstatementwhereintheProphetMuhammad(SAW) is sayingthat
'Yourreligionis untrueandyourentiresystem basedonit is flawed'.
Is thisnotanopendeclarationof rebellionagainsta centuriesoldsystemin practice?
Who wasit thenwhoraisedthe cry of revoltin the quietcity of Makkah?
Who wasthe one to hurlthe stoneof dissentinto the watersof peacefulcity life thatsent wavesof rebellion throughout?
Nowlet us returnto the maintopic. I hadsaidearlierthat aftermigratingto Madinait wastheProphetMuhammad (SAW)whoinitiatedactionagainsttheMakkans. After migrationtheProphetMuhammad(SAW) spentthefirst six monthsin bringingstabilityto the internalsituationof Madina.ThisbeingdonetheProphet(SAW)thensent eightraidingpartiesbeforethe Battle of Badr four of which hecommandedhimself.Theseexpeditionshadtwo objectives.
One objective wasto imperilthe travelroutesof theMakkantradecaravansthatservedasthelifelineof theireconomy.Thisinpresentdayterminologycanbe referredto as "theeconomicblockadeof the Quraysh".
The secondobjectivewasto
politicallyrestraintheQuraysh, whatinmodemdayterminologyisreferredtoas"the politicalisolationandcontainmentoftheQuraysh".
The Prophet(SAW) achievedthis
objectivepartlyby forminga coalitionwith, andpartlyby makingnon-alignmentpacts withthetribesresidingbetweenMakkahandMadinaso thatin the eventof warthey wouldneitherjoin sideswith theProphet(SAW)norwiththeQuraysh.Oneofthese expedition's was sent underthe commandof AbdullahBin Jahsh(RAA)to the Valley of Nakhla. This
valleyis situated betweenTa'if andMakkahand servedas a transitroutefor thetradecaravansoftheQurayshtogainaccesstothe shoreof Yemen on their wayfrom Ta'if.
Prophet(SAW) had instructedthemto keepa close eye on the
activitiesof the Quraysh andkeephimupdatedon thesameon a regular basis.Thepeopleinthisexpeditionwerenotgivenany ordersto engagewiththe enemy. But it so happenedthat thisexpeditionaryforcefounditselfinasituationthat eventuallyresultedin a skirmishwitha tradecaravanof theQurayshcomprisingof fiveindividualsandcarrying plentyof merchandise.Outof
thefive Mushrikeen (polytheists)onewaskilled, twoofthemfled, andthe remainingtwowere, alongwiththebooty, capturedand takento Madina.I do not havethe opportunity or the time todelveintodetails.WhatIintendtobringtoyour attentionisthefactthatsixmonthsaftermigratingto Madina, actionwasinitiatedby the Prophet(SAW) in the form of eight expeditions and
the first Mushrik(polytheist) was
killed by the Muslims.
MoreoveritiscommonknowledgethatProphet Muhammad(SAW)foughtnumerousbattlesafter migratingto Madinaas is corroboratedbya
depictionof the samein the Quran:"Theyfightfor Allah'scause, they killandarealsokilled".Sothedifference betweenthe Prophet'slifeinMakkahandthatinMedinaisevident beforeyou. On surfacethereseemsto bea starkcontrast betweenthe two.
Thisapparentcontradiction is thereasonwhythefamous historianToynbee, whois considered to be an
authorityon the philosophy of history,
has injected all the malicious spite in a singlestatement. To quotewordsof disbeliefdoesnot meantoharbourdisbelief.
Hestatesthat"Muhammad failedas a
Prophetbutsuceededas a Statesman".
Didyou
feel the venomandspitein this sentence? He is suggesting that in MakkahMuhammad's life hadthe semblance of that ofaProphet.TherewefindMuhammad(SAW)giving peoplecallofthefaithofIslam, propagatingreligion, delivering sermons, givingadvice, exhorting good, giving warning
andgladtidings(aboutthe Hereafter), observing patience, beingpeltedwithrocksyetchoosingnotto retaliate.Thisis exactlywhatthelivesof JohntheBaptist (Hazrat Yahya) andJesus Christ(Hazrat Isa) were, peacebe uponthem both. They are the role
modelsfor the Christian world.JesusChrist(PBUH) neverwieldedthesword! He neverbecamethe headof anygovernment! LikewiseJohn theBaptist(PBUH)neverwieldedthesword! Therefore ToynbeeconcludesthattheSeerahoftheProphet Muhammad (SAW) in Makkah is
somewhat similar to a Prophet'swayof life. Although hedoesnottestifyto the prophethoodof Muhammad(SAW) yet headmitsthathis Seerah in Makkahdoes,to someextent, bearlikenessto a prophet'swayof life. But according to himthisis where ProphetMuhammad(SAW) failed. From Makkahhe hadto escape for his life.
Howeverin Madinahe finds the Prophet
Muhammad (SAW) to be an entirelydifferentperson. There he can be seen in the role of a
General,a Cavalier(or skilled horseman), a King, the
'Leader'of the city-stateof Madinah. He himselfis the chief justice; cases are putbeforehim and he can be seen passingverdicton the same.He can be seen makingpactsandagreements. Uponarrivingat Medinahe bringsthreeJewishtribesintoseparatepactswithoutany delay.Pactswithothertribesof Arabiawerealso madein this period.SoToynbeegoesontosaythatthis picture resemblesthatofastatesman.Hedoesnotfinditas reflectinga prophet's glory. He concludesthat Prophet Muhammad(SAW)succeededasastatesman.Butasa Prophethe was unsuccessful.
A
Britishhistorian,MontgomeryWatt, hastriedto make Toynbee'sstatementmoreweightybyusingadifferent tactic. He hasauthoredtwoseparatebookson theSeerah, 'MuhammadatMecca'and'MuhammadatMedina' (Peace be uponhim). By dividingthe Seerah of the Prophet (SAW) intotwoparts,he hasactuallytriedto makemore vividtheirapparent contrast, and has giventhe impression thatthe
Muhammad(SAW) we encounterin Madinahis in realityan altogetherdifferentpersonfrom the Muhammad
(SAW)weseeinMakkah.Ihavegiventhisexample becauseto a certainextentandon the face of it a contrast
doesexist.Butill-meaningpeoplehaveexploitedthis contrastandhavemadethisasubjectofcriticismand
fault-finding.We haveto admitthat they (the two different manifestationsof ProphetMuhammad'spersonality, peace
beuponhim)doappearto moveinseparatedirections. HoweverinthesequelIwillshowwheretheyconverge and howthey relateto each other.
Treaty of Hudaibya
NowI will cite anothersignificantexample. All of you must
havereadandheardthatinthe6thyearoftheHijra (Migration toMadina)a peacetreatywasmadebetween ProphetMuhammad(SAW) andthe Quraysh of
Makkahat a place called Hudaibya whichcan be foundin all booksof theSeerah bythenameof Sulah-e-Hudaibya(orthePeace Treatyof Hudaibya). The conditionsof this treaty wereto a greatextentone-sidedandapparentlyitgavethe impressionas if ProphetMuhammad(SAW) hadrelentedto pressureinmakingthistreaty.Somuchsothathis Companions(RAA)wereextremelyvexedand uneasyas to whythe treatywasmadeon suchunfavourableterms, and they said"Are we so weak! Are we not on the true path! We are readyto lay downour lives for the true cause!" Fourteen hundredCompanions(RAA) hadswornallegiancetothe Prophet(SAW) andto diefor Allah'sCauseif theywere orderedto fight.Eachoneof themhadtakenoathonthe blessedhandof the Prophet(SAW) that he
wouldratherlay downhis life than turnhis back. Then
whywas it that truce wasbeingmadeonsuchunfavourabletermsthey protested.OneoftheconditionsoftheTreatyalso stipulatedthattheyshouldgo back(to Madina),comeout of thestateof Ihram, as Umrahwouldnot be allowedthis time. This initselfwasimpossibleto beaccepted bythe
Companions(RAA).Theyhadarrivedthereina stateof Ihram. The very thoughtthat they wouldhave to take off the IhramwithoutperformingtheUmrahstirredupunease amongstthe Companions. Then there was also an item that
stipulatedthatincaseanypersonfromMakkahwereto come to Madinawithoutexpress permissionof his guardian or tribal chief(i.e. after acceptingIslam) the Muslimswould beunderanobligationto sendhim back. But if a person from Madinaleft the fold of Islam (i.e. becamea disbeliever again)theQuraysh wouldnotbeunderanyobligationto returnhimback.Quiteobviouslyitwasanextremely unequalproposition.
TheCompanionswereclearlydistraughtatthisand becameintenselyresentfulof the fact thatthe termsof the Treatywereinequitable.ThatiswhywhenProphet Muhammad(SAW), after
signingthe Treaty, asked his
CompanionstocomeoutoftheIhram andperformthe ritualsacrificeof theanimalstheyhadbrought withthem for thatpurpose, noneof themgot up.Such wasthestate of theiremotionaldepressionand disturbance. It wasas if their mindsandbodieshadbeen paralysed.Everyonewas heart-broken.The Prophet(SAW) repeatedtwicethatthey shoulduntiethe Ihram andsacrificetheiranimalsbutstill no one moved.Aggrievedanddismayedhe retiredto his tent.ItwasusualforProphetMuhammad(SAW)to be accompaniedbyanyoneof his Honourablewives(RAA) duringtravel.Consequentlyonthisjourneyhehadthe companyofHazratUmm-e-Salma(RAA).TheProphet (SAW)confidedwithheraboutthesituation. She suggestedthat'O Messengerof Allah!Don't-askanybody to doanything.Justsacrificeyouranimalandopenyour Ihram'. The Prophet (SAW) steppedoutside, performedthe ritualsacrifice andsummoneda barbertoshaveoff his hairafterwhichheopenedhisIhram.Whenthe Companions(RAA)sawthis all of themleaptto theirfeet. Thosewhohadbroughtsacrificialanimalswiththem performedtheirsacrifice.Andallofthemafterhaving theirhairtrimmedorshavedopenedtheirIhram. The explanationandinterpretationof thisepisodeis thatthe Companions(RAA)wereinanunsettledstateof mind. Theywerehopingthatperchanceeventsmighttakea favourableturnor thata new(Quranic)revelationmight arrive(fromAllahSWT).ButwhentheProphet(SAW) himselfopenedhis Ihram theirwaveringstateof mindwas goneandeverybodycompliedwiththeProphet's(SAW) instructions, otherwiseGodforbid, wecannoteventhink of theCompanions(RAA)resortingto disobedience. The reasonwhyI havenarratedindetailtheeventsforming partof the backgroundis that you
can fully appreciatethat in the6th yearof the Hijra the conditionsstipulatedin the peacetreatyconcludedat Hudaibyawereinequitableand apparentlyProphet(SAW)negotiated thepeaceina yieldingmanner. In realityhewasatthattimemaking peacepurposefully, eventhoughapparentlywitha surrenderingposture.
Two
years later on an occasion the Quraysh violateda clause of theTreaty, andwhenProphetMuhammad(SAW) held themresponsiblefor doingso, theQuraysh of Makkahin responseannouncedtheir renunciation of
the Treaty. It was thenthat AbuSufyan, whowasat thattime the chief of the entireclanof Quraysh, realizedthattheyhadcommitteda hugemistakein the heat of the
moment. The Treaty borein itself their protection. He decidedthat it shouldbe renewed. ConsequentlyAbuSufyanwenttoMadina.Hesparedno effort, didhis utmostto havethe Treatyrenewed. He sent intermediariesto pleadon his behalfso that Prophet
Muhammad(SAW) wouldagree to a renewalof the Treaty. But AbuSufyan didnotget any positiveresponsefromthe Prophet'sside.TheProphet(SAW)adoptedcomplete silence in
this regard. He did not agree to the
renewalof the Treaty. It maybe notedthatherealso thereis an apparent
contradiction. Aftera periodof twoyearsthechiefof the Quraysh himselfoffers a
truce deal and withthis purposein mindtraveledallthewaytoMadina, butProphet Muhammad(SAW) refuses to accept the offer.
Nowthe relationship betweenthese apparentlyconflicting actionswill be madecongruentin case we
analyzematters moredeeply.Whatis it thatis requiredto makeclearthis interrelationshipof apparentlyopposingattitudes? The connection
betweenthemwill be mademanifestonly after determining'
the true aim and objectiveof
Prophet(SAW) ---thetrueaimandaspirationforwhichtherewasa continuousstrugglerightfromthebeginningofhis Propheticmission.This aim andaspirationwas noneother than"toestablishthesupremacyof Allah'schosenfaith (i.e.Islam)".Itisforthispurposethatatonetime retaliationwasforbidden.Itwasnotpermittedevenin self-defense. Andat
anotherpointin time the orderwasto
repelaggressionandinitiateaction. At one time trucewas beneficialfor attainingthis purpose,so a peacetreatywas made. One'spersonalego wasnotallowedto becomean obstaclein this process. The peace
treatywas negotiated in a yielding, andto someextenta subdued manner, buton
anotheroccasionwhentruce was not advantageousfor the
ultimategoal, itwasnotmade.Inrealityallconflicts betweenactionsareremovedonlyaftertheultimategoal has been clearly identified. The actual
reason behindthe Orientalists'faultyand biasedstanceis their completelack ofunderstandingregardingtheprimarypurposefor whichMessengersweresentfromGodAlmightyto mankind and especially the last Messenger.
