Prophet’s Guidance on treating headaches and Migraines

روى ابن ماجه فى "سننه" حديثاً فى صحته نظر: أنَّ النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم كان إذا صُدِع، غَلَّفَ رأسَه بالحنَّاءِ، ويقول: "إنَّهُ نافعٌ بإذنِ الله من الصُّداعِ".

Narrated by Ibn Majah that whenever Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam suffered from a headache, he used to cover his head with Henna (Khazaab) and said, "Henna helps to relieve headache by the permission of Allah".


Headaches resemble a pain that appears in some part of the head or all of it; but when the headache attacks one side of the head, it is called migraine. The type that attacks the entire head is sometimes called a helmet, for it resembles the helmet that covers the head. Furthermore, headaches sometimes attack only the back or the front side of the head.


There are many types of headaches that result from various conditions. Headaches usually start when the head becomes hot due to the pressure of a septic vapor that accumulates near the head and which seeks a way out of the body but fails. Then, the pressure of the vapor intensifies, just as a pot when it is heated but the steam is unable to escape from it. It is a fact that when moisture heats up, it seeks more space to expand. Similarly, the vapor accumulates near the head and then causes a headache in the entire head because it is unable to expand or escape from the body as it heart up. This condition causes a type of dizziness.


There are various specific causes for headaches. 

• First, when one of the four essential conditions (coldness, hotness, dryness and wetness) becomes predominant. 
• Second, ulcers of the stomach cause headaches, because the cephalic (relating to the head) nerves and the stomach are connected. 
• Third, thick flatulence might accumulate in the stomach and then later ascend to the head and cause headaches. 
• Fourth, headaches are sometimes caused by a tumor in the gastric veins that cause pain in the head, because the stomach and head are connected. 
• Fifth, when the stomach is full of food, it sometimes provokes headaches, as some of the food remains undigested. 
• Sixth, headaches sometimes occur after sexual intercourse because the body will then be weakened and  thus exposed to the heat of the air. 
• Seventh, headaches sometimes occur after vomiting due to excessive dryness, or due to accumulating gaseous materials (flatulence) that ascend to the head from the stomach. 
• Eighth, the hot weather and air provoke headaches. 
• Ninth, headaches are sometimes caused by the cold weather and from the vapor that accumulates in the head and which is unable to decompose. 
• Tenth, not having enough sleep & rest cause headaches. 
• Headaches are sometimes caused due to the pressure exerted on the head, such as when one carries a heavy object on his head. 
• Twelve, excessive talking sometimes weakens the mind in a way that causes headaches. 
• Thirteenth, excessive movements and sports activity can provoke headache. 
• Fourteenth, sadness, depression, obsession and evil thoughts provoke headaches. 
• Fifteenth, excessive hunger results in headache, as in this case; the excess gaseous materials (flatulence) that accumulate in the stomach ascend to the brain and cause headache. 
• Sixteenth, those who suffer from a tumor in the cerebral lining sometimes feel as if hammers are constantly pounding on their heads. 
• Seventeenth, fever provokes headache because of the intense heat that the body suffers from them. 
• Allah knows best.

Headaches result from changes in the system that affects the cerebral arteries



The weaker side of the brain will accept septic material and the migraine headache will be accompanied by pulsation in the arteries. The pain could be relieved in this case when one ties a bandage so that the pulsing of the arteries is stopped and then the pain is lessened.


Abu Naeem said in his book on Prophetic medicine that the migraine type of headache used to attack Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam and that it would prevent him from going out of his house for one or two days at a time. In addition, Abu Naeem related from Ibn Abbas radi Allaho Anh that he said,

عن ابن عباس قال: خطبنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وقد عَصَبَ رأسه بعِصَابةٍ. وفى ((الصحيح)): أنه قال فى مرض موته: ((وَارَأْسَاهُ)). وكان يُعصِّبُ رأسه فى مرضه، وعَصْبُ الرأس ينفع فى وجع الشقيقة وغيرها من أوجاع الرأس.

"Once, Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam delivered a speech while a cloth was tied around his head.


In addition, Sahih Hadith states that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said during the illness that preceded his death: "Ohh my head". He used to tie a piece of cloth around his head. Tying a piece of cloth around the head helps soothe the pain of headaches and migraines.

Treating headaches varies according to their type and causes



Hence, headaches could be relieved by vomiting, eating, being calm and idle, using cold rags, cooling the body, elevating the temperature, avoiding noise, etc.


Knowing these facts, we should mention that treating headaches with Henna is partial and that it treats some types of headache, if the headache is caused by high fever and not by a spoiled substance that requires extraction. Crushed Henna blended with vinegar and applied to the forehead will relieve the headache. Henna soothes the nerves when used as a bandage. Finally, Henna is not only favorable to relieve headaches, but in addition for the various organs of the body and for the hot tumors and inflammations when used as a bandage.

عليّ بن أبي رافع، عن جدته سلمى خادم رسول اللّه  صلى اللّه عليه وسلم قالت (ما كان أحد يشتكي إلى رسول اللّه صلى اللّه عليه وسلم  وَجعاً في رأسه إلا قال: "احتجم" ولا وجعاً في رجليه إلا قال: "اخضبهما") رواه  داود(3).  وعنها أيضاً قالت: (كان لا يصيب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قرحة ولا شوكة  إلا وضع عليها الحناء) رواه الترمذي بإسناد حسن

Ali Bin Abi Rafe'e reported on behalf of his grandfather Salma Radi Allaho Anh (servant of Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam): "If someone complained to Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam for headache, the Prophet asked him for Hijamah & if some one complained for pain in his legs, Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam asked him to anoint with HENNA". (Abu Dawood) He also reports "Whenever the Prophet suffered with injury or thorn piercing, the wound was only treated with Henna". (Tirmizi)



Henna is cold in the first degree and dry in the second degree



The Henna tree has two special qualities:


1. Decomposing due to its warm watery essence

2. Constipating due to the cold earthly essence it contains.



Henna in useful in treating burns and soothes the nerves when used as a bandage, as we have stated. When chewed; Henna helps treat the cankers and thrush that appear in the mouth. Henna heals Stomatitis (inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth) that appears in child's mouth. Using Henna to bandage hot tumors helps, as it has a similar effect on open sores (similar to Dragon's blood tree). When Henna is blended with pure wax and rose oil, it will help against the aches of the side (That ul Janb ~ Pleurisy).


When the symptoms of smallpox start to break out on children and Henna is then applied on the bottom of their feet, the eyes will be immune from the sores that accompany smallpox. When the flower of Henna is placed between wool clothes, it will perfume it and will prevent mold or mite. Furthermore, when the leaves of Henna are submerged in fresh water, then squeezed and drunk for forty days, 20 measures each day with 10 measures of sugar or honey while eating the meat of a young eve (goat), it prevents LEPROSY with its amazing qualities..


We were told that a man once complained from fissuring in his fingers and that he offered monetary rewards to whoever could cure him, but to no avail. Later on, a woman prescribed for him a drink of Henna for ten days but he could not understand the idea. Later on, he soaked Henna leaves in water and drank the water and his fingers were healed and regained their beauty.


Henna when used as an ointment for the fingers, polishes and strengthens them. Henna is useful when blended with butter and then used as a bandage for the hot tumors that drain yellow residue. Henna also benefits against chronic mange, helps the hair grow, makes it stronger and strengthens the head & brain. Finally, Henna helps against the blisters and the pustules that appear on the legs and feet and the rest of the body in general.

هــندبــا / Hindaba / Kasni (Chicory)

هِنْدَبَا: ورد فيها ثلاثةُ أحاديث لا تصِحُّ عن رسول اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم، ولا يثبُت مثلها، بل هى موضوعة.. أحدها: "كُلُوا الهِندَبَاءَ ولا تَنْفُضُوهُ فإنه ليس يومٌ مِنَ الأيام إلا وقَطَراتٌ من الجَنَّةِ تَقْطُر عليه". الثانى: "مَن أكَلَ الهِندبَاء، ثم نام عليها لم يَحِلَّ فيهِ سَمٌ ولا سِحرٌ". الثالث: "ما مِنْ وَرَقةٍ من وَرَقِ الهِنْدبَاء إلا وعليها قَطْرَةٌ من الجَنَّةِ".

وبعد.. فهى مستحيلة المزاج، منقلبةٌ بانقلاب فصول السنة، فهى فى الشتاء باردة رطبة، وفى الصيف حارة يابسة، وفى الرَّبيعِ والخريفِ معتدِلة، وفى غالب أحوالِها تميلُ إلى البرودة واليُبْس، وهى قابضة مبردةٌ، جيدةٌ للمَعِدَة، وإذا طُبِخَت وأُكلت بِخَلٍّ، عقَلتِ البطن وخاصةٌ البَرىَّ منها، فهى أجود للمَعِدَة، وأشد قبضاً، وتنفع مِن ضعفها. وإذا تُضمِّد بها، سلبت الالتهاب العارض فى المَعِدَة، وتنفع من النقْرس، ومن أورام العَيْن الحارة. وإذا تُضمِّد بَوَرَقِها وأُصولها، نفعت من لسع العقرب.وهى تُقَوِّى المَعِدَة، وتفتح السُّدد العارضة فى الكَبِد، وتنفع مِن أوجاعها حارِّها وباردِها، وتفتح سُدَد الطِّحال والعروق والأحشاء، وتُنَقِّى مجارى الكُلَى.

وأنفعُهَا للكَبِدِ أمرُّها، وماؤها المعتَصَر ينفع من اليَرَقان السدَدى، ولا سِيَّما إذا خُلِط به ماء الرَّازَيَانَج الرطب، وإذا دُقَّ ورقُها، ووُضِع على الأورام الحارة برَّدها وحلَّلها، ويجلو ما فى المَعِدَة، ويُطفئُ حرارة الدَّم والصفراء.

وأصلحُ ما أُكلت غير مغسولة ولا منفوضة، لأنها متى غُسلت أو نُفِضَت، فارقتها قُوَّتُها، وفيها مع ذلك قوة تِرياقية تنفعُ مِن جميع السموم. وإذا اكتُحِلَ بمائها، نفع من العَشَا، ويدخل ورقُها فى الترياق، وينفعُ من لدغ العقرب، ويُقاوِم أكثرَ السموم، وإذا اعتُصِرَ ماؤها، وصُبَّ عليه الزيتُ، خلَّص من الأدوية القتَّالة، وإذا اعتُصِرَ أصلُهَا، وشُرِبَ ماؤه، نفع من لسع الأفاعى، ولسع العقرب، ولسع الزنبور، ولبن أصلها يجلو بياضَ العَيْن.

There are three Hadith mentioning Hindaba but they are weak, we may consider them as a healing, they are as under :


1. "Use Hindaba & do not clean it, because everyday, drops from Jannah (paradise) fall on Hindaba's leaves".

2. "Whoever took Hindaba & then slept, he will not be affected by Sehr (magic) or poison".

3. "Among the leaves of Hindaba, there is not a single leaf on which drops from the paradise do not fall".




Hindaba's temperament changes according to the season. It is cold and wet in winter, hot and dry in summer and mild in spring and autumn. In general, Hindaba is cold and dry. It is beneficial and cools the stomach and causes constipation. When Hindaba, especially wild Hindaha, is cooked and eaten with vinegar, it constipates even more and is more favorable for the stomach and invigorating.


When Hindaba (chicory) is used as a bandage, it will relieve gastric inflammations, gout and hot ocular inflammations (in the eyes). In cases of scorpion stings, Hindaba helps when its leaves and stems are used as a bandage. Hindaba strengthens the stomach and opens the clogs in the kidneys, spleen, veins arid intestines. It clears and purifies the kidneys and helps them against the various hot and cold aches.


Sour Hindaba is the best for liver, while its extract helps against jaundice, especially when mixed with wet fennel extract. When Hindaba leaves are crushed and placed on hot swellings, they will cool and dissipate them. Hindaba cleanses and clears the chest and dissipates the heat of irritated blood and bile.





The best way to eat Hindaba is without washing it so as to preserve its effective ingredients. Hindaba works as an effective antidote against most poisons. When Hindaba extract is used as eyeliner (KOHL), it will clear and cleanse the eyes. Hindaba leaves are used in antidotes against scorpion stings, and against most poisons as we have stated. When Hindaba is squeezed and its water is mixed with oil, it will help against all toxic substances in general. When Hindaba stems are squeezed and their water drunk, it will help against scorpion and hornet stings and against snakebite. Finally, the sap of its stems brightens the white area in the eye.

روى أبو نعيم في الطب عن أبان بن صالح عن أنس - رضي الله تعالى عنه - أن رسول الله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - قال: (بخروا بيوتكم بالشيح والمر والصعتر) كنز العمال  28316

Narrated by Abu Nuaim on the authority of Abban Bin Saleh Bin Anas radi Allaho Anh, that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said : "Fumigate your houses with Mugwort, Myrrh & Thyme". (Kanz-ul-Ummal)

Apart from fumigation, all of the above 3 are edible as well & the combined army of these three will kill the germs, bacteria & other microbes / organisms in intestines Insha'Allah.

Myrrh is one of the resins praised by Tibb-e-Nabwi, & it is mostly used for fumigation, the fragrance of Myrrh will refresh every corner of your house. Another species of Myrrh is Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) which has similar properties, but Myrrh is more stronger.

When used internally, Myrrh is a powerful de-toxifier, lowers cholesterol & it stabilizes blood sugar levels. The sweet-smelling oleo-gum resin is alterative, analgesic, antibiotic, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, astringent, bitter, carminative, diaphoretic, disinfectant, emetic (large doses) emmenagogue, expectorant, purgative (large doses), rejuvenative, sedative, stimulant, stomachic and tonic. In Unani medicines it is used in dysmenorrhoea and amenorrhoea, in chest infections and chronic bronchitis, asthma and phthisis for stimulating expectoration. It is also useful in dyspepsia and uterine infections. Powdered myrrh has been endorsed as a beneficial treatment for inflammations in the throat and mouth. Myrrh acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic and can be applied directly to sores and wounds.



Taken internally, myrrh is a beneficial treatment for loose teeth, gingivitis, and bad breath. The tincture may also be applied directly to a tooth to relieve toothache. It is antifungal, and has been used to treat athlete’s foot and Candida. Some research indicates that myrrh is effective in reducing cholesterol levels. It is a tonic remedy said to relax smooth muscles, increase peristaltic action, and stimulate gastric secretions. The myrrh resin has antimicrobial properties and acts to stimulate macrophage activity in the blood stream. The herb is being studied for its potential as an anticancer medication. It is useful for relieving gastric distress and as an expectorant. Myrrh increases the motility of white blood cells and normalizes mucous membrane activity, which helps the body fight infection. It also promotes tissue granulation and combats blood stagnation.

كَرَفْس: روى فى حديث لا يصِحُّ عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، أنه قال: "مَن أكَلَهُ ثم نامَ عليه، نام ونَكْهتُهُ طَيِّبةٌ، وينامُ آمناً من وَجَعِ الأضراسِ والأسنانِ"، وهذا باطل على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ولكن البُسْتانىَّ منه يُطيِّب النكهة جدّاً، وإذا عُلِّق أصله فى الرقبة نفع من وجع الأسنان.

وهو حارٌ يابس، وقيل: رطب مفتِّح لسُداد الكَبِد والطِّحال، وورقُه رطباً ينفعُ المَعِدَة والكَبِدَ الباردة، ويُدِرُّ البَوْل والطَّمْث، ويُفتِّت الحصاة، وحَبّه أقوى فى ذلك، ويُهيِّج الباه، وينفعُ مِن البَخَر. قال الرازىُّ: وينبغى أن يُجتنب أكله إذا خِيفَ من لدغ العقارب.

There is a false Hadith related to Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam which says, "Whoever eats Karafs (Celery) & then sleeps, then his breath's smell will remain pleasant & he will be saved from toothache".


But it is a fact that Bustani Karafs (Celery) has a good aroma, it makes the breath pleasant and when it is hung under the neck, it relieves toothache.



Karafs is hot and dry, and it opens the clogs of the liver and spleen. Wet celery leaves helps the stomach and the cold liver, causes urine (it is a diuretic), menstrual flow, and dissolves stones. Celery seeds are more effective in this regard. Karafs stimulates semen production and relieves offensive breath. Al-Razi said, "One should avoid eating it if he fears he might suffer a scorpion sting".



Other Benefits of Celery seeds :


Lowers Blood Pressure and Cholesterol - in one study, at the University of Chicago, lab animals who were given a daily dose of a compound extracted from celery seed experienced a 12 percent reduction in their blood pressure over a four-week period. The same study indicated it may reduce artery-clogging cholesterol. A traditional Vietnamese remedy for high blood pressure.

Healthy Joints - celery has been used and suggested as an alternative therapy for arthritis, rheumatism, and gout. Celery seed is most often taken to aid in the maintenance of healthy joints. Celery seeds have been found to have anti-inflammatory properties that reduce swelling and pain around the joints. It is suitable for anyone who wishes to reduce the degeneration of body joints that commonly occurs with age. Celery seed can also ease joint discomfort that occurs due to inflammation and is, in fact, used for the relief of symptoms of conditions such as arthritis.

Antiseptic Properties - celery seed has an antiseptic property that makes it useful to the health of the urinary tract and a diuretic property to help relieve fluid retention. Celery seed aids in the elimination of uric acid. These properties can prove useful in cases of bladder disorders, cystitis, and kidney disorders. Celery seed helps with urinary tract infection in women.

Acts as A Diuretic - the herb contains a diuretic substance that also benefits arthritis and gout patients, as it helps to flush away the uric acid crystals that build up around the joints. Celery helps shed water weight.

Menstrual Discomfort - celery may promote the onset of menstruation.

Anxiety - celery seed can help soothe the nerves and relieve pain.

Aids Digestion - Consuming celery seed in food also aids in the digestion of protein.

Anti-Cancer Agents - contains eight different families of anti-cancer compounds, such as phthalides and polyacetylenes, which detoxify carcinogens, present in high concentrations in cigarette smoke.

روى أبو نعيم في  الطب عن أبان بن صالح عن أنس - رضي الله تعالى عنه - أن رسول الله - صلى الله عليه  وسلم - قال: (بخروا بيوتكم بالشيح والمر والصعتر) كنز العمال  28316

Mugwort (Sheeh) leaves are edible, young leaves are boiled as a pot herb or used in salad, they aid in digestion although said to have a bitter taste. Used for centuries as an alternative medicine, it is antibacterial, anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic, digestive, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, haemostatic, nervine, purgative, stimulant, stomachic, and tonic, cleansing toxins from the blood. An infusion of the leaves and flowering tops is used in the treatment of all matters connected to the digestive system, it increases stomach acid and bile production, eases gas and bloating, improving digestion, the absorption of nutrients and strengthening the entire digestive system.

It is used in alternative medicine to expel intestinal worms, nervous and spasmodic affections, asthma, sterility, functional bleeding of the uterus and menstrual complaints, and diseases of the brain. As a gargle for sore throat, a wash for sores and a poultice for infections, tumors and to stop bleeding. The leaves have an antibacterial action, inhibiting the growth of Staphococcus aureus, Bacillus typhi, B. dysenteriae, streptococci, E. coli, B. subtilis, and pseudomonas. A weak tea made from the infused plant is a good all-purpose insecticide. The fresh or the dried plant repels insects.

Health Benefits of Artemisia ~ Mugwort

Multiple benefits of Artemisia have been for centuries known in many regions of the world.

Historically and up untill now the plant have been used for a variety of digestive tract disorders. Soothing the inflammation of intestinal tissues, herbal extracts relieve diarrhea and constipation, decrease stomach pain and cramping, and aid digestion by boosting the supply of nutrients to the cells. Its appetite-stimulating action is beneficial for the patients with depression who refuse to take meals.

ريـحان: قال تعالى‏:‏ ‏{‏فأما إن كان من المقربين فروح وريحان وجنة نعيم‏}‏ ‏[‏الواقعة‏:‏ 88‏]‏‏.‏وقال تعالى‏:‏ ‏{‏والحب ذو العصف والريحان‏}‏‏[‏الرحمن‏:‏ 12‏]‏‏.‏ وفي صحيح مسلم عن النبي ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ‏:‏ ‏(‏من عرض عليه ريحان، فلا يرده، فإنه خفيف المحمل طيب الرائحة‏)‏‏.‏ وفي سنن ابن ماجه‏:‏ من حديث أسامة رضي الله عنه، عن النبي ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ أنه قال‏:‏ ‏(‏ألا مشمر للجنة، فإن الجنة لا خطر لها، هي ورب الكعبة، نور يتلألأ، وريحانة تهتز، وقصر مشيد، ونهر مطرد وثمرة نضيجة، وزوجة حسناء جميلة، وحلل كثيرة في مقام أبدًا، في حبرة ونضرة، في دور عالية سليمة بهتة، قالوا‏:‏ نعم يا رسول الله، نحن المشمرون لها قال‏:‏ قولوا‏:‏ إن شاء الله تعالى، فقال القوم‏:‏ إن شاء الله‏)‏‏.‏

الريحان كل نبت طيب الريح، فكل أهل بلد يخصونه بشيء من ذلك، فأهل الغرب يخصونه بالآس، وهو الذي يعرفه العرب من الريحان، وأهل العراق والشام يخصونه بالحبق‏.‏ فأما الآس، فمزاجه بارد في الأولى، يابس في الثانية، وهو مع ذلك مركب من قوى متضادة، والأكثر فيه الجوهر الأرضي البارد، وفيه شيء حار لطيف، وهو يجفف تجفيفًا قويًا، وأجزاؤه متقاربة القوة، وهي قوة قابضة حابسة من داخل وخارج معًا‏.‏

وهو قاطع للإسهال الصفراوي، دافع للبخار الحار الرطب إذا شم، مفرح للقلب تفريحًا شديدًا، وشمه مانع للوباء، وكذلك افتراشه في البيت‏.‏ ويبرئ الأورام الحادثة في الحالبين إذا وضع عليها، وإذا دق ورقه وهو غض وضرب بالخل، ووضع على الرأس، قطع الرعاف، وإذا سحق ورقه اليابس، وذر على القروح ذوات الرطوبة نفعها، ويقوي الأعضاء الواعية إذا ضمد به، وينفع داء الداحس، وإذا ذر على البثور والقروح التي في اليدين والرجلين، نفعها‏.‏ وإذا دلك به البدن قطع العرق، ونشف الرطوبات الفضلية، وأذهب نتن الإبط، وإذا جلس في طبيخه، نفع من خراريج المقعدة والرحم، ومن استرخاء المفاصل، وإذا صب على كسور العظام التي لم تلتحم، نفعها‏.‏ ويجلو قشور الرأس وقروحه الرطبة، وبثوره، ويمسك الشعر المتساقط ويسوده، وإذا دق ورقه، وصب عليه ماء يسير، وخلط به شيء من زيت أو دهن الورد، وضمد به، وافق القروح الرطبة والنملة والحمرة، والأورام الحادة، والشرى والبواسير‏.‏

وحبه نافع من نفث الدم العارض في الصدر والرئة، دابغ للمعدة وليس بضار للصدر ولا الرئة لجلاوته، وخاصيته النفع من استطلاق البطن مع السعال، وذلك نادر في الأدوية، وهو مدر للبول، نافع من لذغ المثانة وعض الرتيلاء، ولسع العقارب، والتخلل بعرقه مضر، فليحذر‏.‏ وأما الريحان الفارسي الذي يسمى الحبق، فحار في أحد القولين، ينفع شمه من الصداع الحار إذا رش عليه الماء، ويبرد، ويرطب بالعرض، وبارد في الاخر، وهل هو رطب أو يابس‏؟‏ على قولين‏.‏ والصحيح‏:‏ أن فيه من الطبائع الأربع، ويجلب النوم،وبزره حابس للإسهال الصفراوي، ومسكن للمغص، مقو للقلب، نافع للأمراض السوداوية‏.‏

Allah Said in Quran :


"Then, if he (the dying person) be of the Muqarrabeen (those brought near to Allah), there is for him rest and provision, and a Garden of Delights (Paradise). 

(Surah Waq'eah : 88, 89)

And He Said :

"And in addition the corn, with (its) leaves and stalks for fodder and sweet-scented plants". 

(Surah Rahman : 12)

Muslim narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:


"Whoever is presented with Rayhan should not refuse it, because it is easy to wear and has a good scent".


Ibn Majah narrated in his Sunan that Usamah Radi Allaho Anh related from Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam that he said:

"Is there any blessing like Paradise, for Paradise is all good and pure. It is by the Lord of the Ka’bah, a shinning light, a twinkling Rayhan, a luxurious palace, a running river, a ripe date, and a beautiful, pretty wife. It has many suits, eternal residence in a good place of dwelling, fruits, vegetables, comfort and bounty in an exalted, comfortable dwelling. They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, we are ready for it. He said, Say, by Allah’s Leave. They said, By Allah’s Leave".


Every plant that has a good scent is called Rayhan. Therefore, every area gives a certain plant that name. For instance, the people to the west (Morocco), as well as the Arabs call the aromatic plants Rayhan. The people in Iraq and Sham call the Hibq (a type of mint) a Rayhan.

Rayhan or myrtle is cold in the first degree and dry in the second degree. Yet, it is a compound of several qualities, most of which consist of earthly cold essence. Myrtle consists of a soft hot substance. Myrtle dries the head nicely and is effective as a constipating agent.


Myrtle prevents bile diarrhea and dissipates hot and wet vapor when one smells its scent, the fragrance brings relief to the heart and prevents various ailments, especially when the plant is spread around the house.


Furthermore, myrtle heals the tumors that occur in the two ureters (muscular tubes that propel urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder) when it is coated on them. When fresh myrtle leaves are ground, blended with vinegar, and then placed on the head, they will stop nose bleeding. When dried myrtle leaves are crushed and the powder is sprinkled on wet ulcers, it will heal them and will help weak organs when used as a bandage, relieve septic finger and will heal spots and the ulcers on the hands and feet.


When myrtle is used to rub the body, it eliminates sweat, dries the excess wetness and dissipates underarm odor. When one sits in the water that myrtle was cooked in, it will help against infections on the buttocks and vagina and will heal weak joints and broken bones (when it is poured on the wound).


In addition, myrtle helps eliminate dandruff, the wet ulcers and spots that appear on the head. It also helps the hairs against falling and gives them a black color. When myrtle leaves are ground with a little water and then blended with some oil or rose grease, and then used as a bandage, it will be suitable against fresh (or humid) ulcers, canker sores, Erysipelas (acute, bacterial skin infection resulting in inflammation), acute tumors, Urticaria (hives) and Hemorrhoids.


Rayhan helps against Hemoptysis (spitting up blood as seen in Tuberculosis) of the chest and lungs. It cools the stomach, does not harm the chest or the stomach and cleanses them, it helps against diarrhea and coughing, and this is a special quality for Rayhan that is rarely found in other medications. Myrtle seeds help urine production (they are a safe diuretic) and heal urinary bladder infections, spider bites and scorpion stings. Using Rayhan roots to clean between the teeth is harmful though.


Persian Rayhan, which is Hibq is hot, and when its scent is smelled, it helps against hot headaches when water is sprinkled on the Hibq and then is allowed to cool down, it is said that this kind of myrtle is cold, but it looks like it has all of the four types of temperaments (dry, wet, hot and cold). It also helps bring sleep to the eyes. The seeds of Persian myrtle relieve diarrhea of the bile, stomach, strengthen the heart and help against black bile ailments.

حناء / Henna

روى ابن ماجه فى "سننه" حديثاً فى صحته نظر: أنَّ النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم كان إذا صُدِع، غَلَّفَ رأسَه بالحنَّاءِ، ويقول: "إنَّهُ نافعٌ بإذنِ الله من الصُّداعِ".

Narrated by Ibn Majah that whenever Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam suffered from a headache,he used to cover his head with Henna (Khazaab) and said, "Henna helps to relieve headache by the permission of Allah".


Headaches could be relieved by vomiting, eating, being calm and idle, using cold rags, cooling the body, elevating the temperature, avoiding noise, etc. Knowing these facts, we should mention that treating headaches with Henna is partial and that it treats some types of headache, if the headache is caused by high fever and not by a spoiled substance that requires extraction. Crushed Henna blended with vinegar and applied to the forehead will relieve the headache. Henna soothes the nerves when used as a bandage. Finally, Henna is not only favorable to relieve headaches, but in addition for the various organs of the body and for the hot tumors and inflammations when used as a bandage.

عليّ بن أبي رافع، عن جدته سلمى خادم رسول اللّه صلى اللّه عليه وسلم قالت (ما كان أحد يشتكي إلى رسول اللّه صلى اللّه عليه وسلم وَجعاً في رأسه إلا قال: "احتجم" ولا وجعاً في رجليه إلا قال: "اخضبهما") رواه داود وعنها أيضاً قالت: (كان لا يصيب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قرحة ولا شوكة  إلا وضع عليها الحناء) رواه الترمذي بإسناد حسن

Ali Bin Abi Rafe'e reported on behalf of his grandfather Salma Radi Allaho Anh (servant of Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam): "If someone complained to Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam for headache, our beloved Prophet asked him for Hijamah & if someone complained for pain in his legs, Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam asked him to anoint with HENNA". (Abu Dawood) 
He also reports "Whenever Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam suffered with injury or thorn piercing, the wound was only treated with Henna". (Tirmizi)


Henna is cold in the first degree and dry in the second degree



The Henna tree has two special qualities:


1. Decomposing due to its warm watery essence

2. Constipating due to the cold earthly essence it contains.



Henna in useful in treating burns and soothes the nerves when used as a bandage, as we have stated. When chewed; Henna helps treat the cankers and thrush that appear in the mouth. Henna heals Stomatitis (inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth) that appears in child's mouth. Using Henna to bandage hot tumors helps, and it has a similar effect on open sores (similar to Dragon's blood tree). When Henna is blended with pure wax and rose oil, it will help against the aches of the side (That ul Janb ~ Pleurisy).


When the symptoms of smallpox start to break out on children; and Henna is then applied on the bottom of their feet, the eyes will be immune from the sores that accompany smallpox. When the flower of Henna is placed between wool clothes, it will perfume it and will prevent mold or mite. Furthermore, when the leaves of Henna are submerged in fresh water, then squeezed and drunk for forty days, 20 measures each day with 10 measures of sugar or honey while eating the meat of a young eve (goat), it prevents LEPROSY with its amazing qualities.





Ibn Al Qayyam wrote about a man who complained from fissuring in his fingers and that he offered monetary rewards to whoever could cure him, but to no avail. Later on, a woman prescribed for him a drink of Henna for ten days but he could not understand the idea. Later on, he soaked Henna leaves in water and drank the water and his fingers were healed and regained their beauty.


Henna when used as an ointment for the fingers, polishes and strengthens them. Henna is useful when blended with butter and then used as a bandage for the hot tumors that drain yellow residue. Henna also benefits against chronic mange, helps the hair grow, makes it stronger and strengthens the head & brain. Finally, Henna helps against the blisters and the pustules that appear on the legs and feet and the rest of the body in general.

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: (إن اليهود والنصارى لا يصبغون فخالفوهم) رواه البخاري ومسلم

Reported by Abu Hurairah Radi Allaho Anh that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said "Jews & Chiristians do not dye their hairs, so oppose them by applying the color (HENNA)."



Hennas was loved by Khulafa'-e-Rashideen, Abu Bakr & Umar Radi Allaho Anhuma.

وعن أنس رضي الله عنه قال: (اختضب أبو بكر بالحناء والكتم واختضب عمر بالحناء بحتاً أي صرفاً) رواه مسلم  .

Reported by Anas Radi Allaho Anh "Abu Bakr Radi Allaho Anh used to color his hairs by HENNA & KATAM, & Umar Radi Allaho Anh used to dye only with HENNA".



Imam Muhammad Ahmed Zahabi says that there are three essential factors for healing :


1. Expulsion of fluids from the wounds

2. Cessation of production (of any more fluids)

3. Formation of healthy flesh (tissue granulation) to fill the gap created in the wound



Henna contains all these three factors and possesses very good healing properties.

اللَّهُمَّ إنِّي أَسْأَلْكَ عِلْماً نَافِعاً وعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلاً ورِزْقاً حَلالاً طَيِّباً

Faghiyah (Henna Blossom)

فَاغِيَةٌ: هى نَوْرُ الحِنَّاء، وهى من أطيب الرياحين، وقد روى البيهقى فى كتابه "شُعَب الإيمان" من حديث عبد الله بن بُريدَة، عن أبيه رضى الله عنه يرفعه: "سيدُ الرَّياحين فى الدنيا والآخرة الفاغِيَةُ"، وروى فيه أيضاً، عن أنس بن مالك رضى الله عنه، قال: "كان أحَبَّ الرَّياحين إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الفاغِيَةُ". والله أعلم بحال هذين الحديثين، فلا نشهد على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بما لا نعلم صِحته.وهى معتدلةٌ فى الحر واليُبْس، فيها بعضُ القبض، وإذا وُضِعَتْ بين طىِّ ثياب الصوف حفظتْها من السوس، وتدخل فى مراهم الفالج والتمدد، ودُهنها يُحلِّل الأعضاء، ويُلَيِّن العصب.

Narrated by Al-Bayhaqi, on the authority of Abdullah Bin Buraidah's father "The best of perfumes in this world & the hereafter is Faghiyah". Furthermore, narrated by Al-Bayhaqi on the authority of Anas Bin Malik Radi Alaho Anh that he said, "The best perfumed loved by Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam was Faghiyah". But we are not sure if these Hadith are authentic or not.


Faghiyah which is Henna blossom, is one of the best kinds of perfumes, Faghiyah is mild in its hotness and dryness, and constipates mildly. When Faghiyah is placed between folded wool clothes, it protects them from mold and mites. Faghiyah is used in ointments against facial paralysis and Aneurysm (an abnormal widening or ballooning of a portion of an artery due to weakness in the wall of the blood vessel), while its oil helps the organs and relaxes the nerves.

خَلٌ Khall (Vinegar)

خَلٌ: روى مسلم فى "صحيحه": عن جابر بن عبد الله رضى الله عنهما، أنَّ رسولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم سأل أهلَه الإدَامَ، فقالوا: ما عندنَا إلا خَلٌ، فدعا به، وجعل يأكُلُ ويقول: "نِعْمَ الإدَامُ الخَلُّ، نِعْمَ الإدَامُ الخَلُّ". وفى "سنن ابن ماجه" عن أُمِّ سعد رضى الله عنها عن النبىِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم: "نِعْمَ الإدَامُ الخَلُّ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ فى الخَلِّ، فإنه كان إدامَ الأنبياء قبلى، ولَمْ يَفْتَقِر بيتٌ فيه الخَلُّ".

الخَل: مركَّب من الحرارة، والبرودة أغلبُ عليه، وهو يابس فى الثالثة، قوىُّ التجفيف، يمنع من انصباب المواد، ويُلطِّف الطبيعة، وخَلُّ ينفع المعدة الملتهبة، ويَقْمَعُ الصَّفْرَاء، ويدفع ضَرَر الأدوية القتَّالة، ويُحَلِّل اللَّبنَ والدم إذا جَمَدا فى الجوف، وينفع الطِّحَالَ، ويدبغ المَعِدة، ويَعقِلُ البطن، ويقطعُ العطش، ويمنع الورمَ حيث يُريد أن يحدث، ويُعين على الهضم، ويُضاد البلغم، ويُلطِّف الأغذية الغليظة، ويُرِقُّ الدم.

وإذا شُرِب بالملح، نفع من أكل الفُطُر القتَّال، وإذا احتُسى، قطع العلق المتعلق بأصل الحنَكِ، وإذ تُمضمض به مُسَخَّناً، نفع من وجع الأسنان، وقوَّى اللِّثَة. وهو نافع للدَّاحِس، إذا طُلِىَ به، والنملةِ والأورام الحارة، وحرق النار، وهو مُشَهٍّ للأكل، مُطيِّب للمَعِدة، صَالح للشباب، وفى الصيف لسكان البلاد الحارة.



Muslim narrated in his Sahih that Jabir bin Abdullah said, "The Messenger of Allah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) asked his wife for food and she said that I have vinegar. He asked for some of it and started eating from it while saying: "What an excellent food is Khall (vinegar), what an excellent food is Khall (vinegar)". (He ate it with bread.).


Ibn-e-Majah narrated from Umm Sa'ad Radi Allaho Anha that Prophet Muhamamd Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said : "What an excellent food Khall (vinegar) is, O Allah ! Put Your Blessings in Khall because it was the food of Prophets before me & any house having the Khall (vinegar) will never face poverty". (House having the Khall means that vinegar is the food of its residents).


Khall (vinegar) is a substance that is both hot and cold, although coldness is usually more apparent. It is dry in the third degree and a strong drying agent. Vinegar soothes the body and softens the nature, vinegar helps against gastric inflammation and bile & prevents the harm of toxic medications, and it decomposes milk and the blood when coagulated and helps the spleen. Khall coats the stomach, constipates, quenches the thirst and prevents tumors from occurring. It also helps the digestion process; works against phlegm, softens thick foods and softens the consistency of the blood.


When vinegar is drunk with salt, it will help against poisonous mushrooms. When vinegar is sipped, it will dissolve the clogs that occur in the blood in the lower jaw. When one rinses his mouth with warm vinegar, it relieves toothache and strengthens the gingival.



When a septic finger is anointed with vinegar, it helps to heal it, furthermore, vinegar relieves pustules, hot tumors and fire bums. Vinegar is an appetite stimulant, softens the stomach, and favorable for young people and for those who live in warm areas.
