An Islamic View of Gog Magog in the Modern World

 

 

They will take most of mankind into the hellfire hence they are an essentially godless and sinful people (Hadith)

The Hadith narrated by Abu Said al-Khudri and recorded in the Sahih of Imam al-Bukhari (quoted before) contains within it a Hadith al-Qudsi (i.e. direct speech of Allah Most High) indicating that Gog and Magog would transform 999 out of every 1000 of mankind into Ahlu Y’ajuj wa M’ajuj (i.e. members of their household) and, as a consequence, all those people would enter into the hellfire. The inescapable implication is that the Gog and Magog mainstream way of life would be godless and sinful and would lead to the hellfire. 

 

• They are linked to the abandonment of the Hajj (Hadith)

A Hadith recorded in Sahih Bukhari disclosed a link that exists between Gog and Magog and the abandonment of the Hajj: Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: The Prophet pbuh said, “The people will continue performing the Hajj and 'Umra to the Ka‘ba even after the appearance of Gog and Magog.” Narrated Shu'ba extra: The Hour (i.e. Last Hour) will not be established till the Hajj (to the Ka'ba) is abandoned. 

 

What this prophecy does is to direct attention to the eventual abandonment of the Hajj and to inform that the release of Gog and Magog into the world is an event that would precede that abandonment of the Hajj. In other words, when the Hajj is abandoned it would no longer be possible for any Muslim to deny the release of Gog and Magog. (This writer expects the Hajj to be finally abandoned at that time when Israel wages her big war and attempts to take control of all territory between “the river of Egypt and the river Euphrates” (see Genesis: -15:18, “On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abraham, saying: To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates . . .”) Israel’s great war can take place at any time now, and will most certainly take place before Jesus (‘alaihi al-Salam) returns. We may not have long to wait before this important part of the Gog and Magog profile manifests in the world to silence all critics who reject the view that Gog and Magog have already been released into the world.

2. The First Stage in The Process of Descent and the Relevant Qur'anic Terminology

The Process of Creation
A Qur'anic Perspective

The Qur'an identifies the verbal imperative of Allah i.e. “Kun” or “Be!” --- The kalimah of Allah --- as being the basis and catalyst through which initiated the process of Genesis or the Event of Creation. In the Words of the Qur'an:

“…..and when He wills a thing (amr) to be, He but says unto it, “Be” --- and it is.”

[Al-Baqarah, 2:117]

“…..when He wills a thing (amr) to be, He but says unto it, “Be” --- and it is.”

[Aal-e-Imran, 3:47]

“…..Glory be to Him; when He wills a thing (amr) to be, He but says unto it, “Be” --- and it is.”

[Maryam, 19:35]

“…..and when He wills a thing (amr) to be, He but says unto it, “Be” --- and it is.”

[Al-Momin, 40:68]

These four ayaat and numerous others addressing the same theme practically manifest an identical meaning, and the conclusion to be derived from them is that, whenever Allah decides on a matter, it is sufficient for Him to utter the verbal imperative “Kun” (i.e. Be!) and the matter is done --- the “Word of Allah” is all that is needed in order to bring a thing or event into being. But there are two more ayaat that discuss this matter in somewhat greater detail:

“Whenever We Will anything to be, We but (have to) say unto it “Be” --- and it is.”

[Al-Nahl, 16:40]

“The (nature) of His amr is such that when He wills a thing to be, He but says unto it, “Be” --- and it is.”

[Yaseen, 36:82]

The relationship between the “kalimah of Allah” and bringing of a thing or event into being has a direct bearing on the issue of interpreting the meaning of “kalimah”. The Qur'an repeatedly refers to the legal injunctions, individual and social moral decrees, juridical decisions, and ordained laws set by Allah as the kalimaat or “Words” of Allah, as all of these matters are indeed the outcome of the “Word of Allah”. However, it is entirely possible that the reference to the “Words of my Lord” and the “Words of Allah” as being “limitless” in the following two ayaat refers to things and matters in the created order. Just as the Knowledge and Wisdom of Allah is limitless, it is entirely possible that this “inexhaustibility” is partially reflected in the domain of created order. If this interpretation is accepted then every single created being would represent the manifestation of a Divine Imperative “Be”! The two ayaat are as follows:

“Say: If all the sea were ink for my Lord’s words, the sea would indeed be exhausted before the words of my Lord are exhausted! And (thus it would be) if we were to add to it sea upon sea.”

[Al-Kahf, 17:109]

“And if all the trees on earth were pens, and the sea (were) ink, with seven (more) seas yet added to it, the words of Allah would not be exhausted, for verily Allah is Mighty, Wise.”

[Luqman, 31:27]

Not withstanding the general rule outlined in the above two ayaat, out of the innumerable and limitless creations that Allah has brought into being, the Qur'an explicitly refers to only Prophet Isa (pbuh) (Jesus Christ) as being the “Word of Allah”. In Surah Aal-e-Imran [3:39], the Qur'an describes Prophet Yahya (pbuh) (John the Baptist) as being one who would “…..confirm the truth of a Word from Allah”. And a little later in the same Surah [3:45], the Qur'an uses the following words to describe Prophet Isa (pbuh) in the context of the glad tidings that the angel came to give to Maryam regarding the virgin birth of a noble child: “O Maryam! Allah sends you glad tidings of a Word from Him.” And Surah Al-Nisa [4:171] offers even greater details regarding the relation of the “Word” of Allah and Prophet Isa (pbuh):

“…..Verily, the Messiah --- Isa the son of Maryam (Mary) - -- is the messenger of Allah and His word that He bestowed upon Maryam…..”

The reason for this appears to be the fact that along with the “creation” and “fashioning” of everything, Allah also has an established procedure regarding the “apportioning” and “guiding” of everything:

“Extol the limitless glory of the Lord’s name, the glory of the All-Highest who creates (everything), and thereupon forms and fashions it in accordance with what it is meant to be, and who determines (and apportions) the nature (of all that exists), and thereupon guides it (towards its fulfillment).” 

[Al-Aala, 87:1-3]

It is this very “apportioning” and “guiding” that manifests in the realm of inanimate matter in the form of the “laws of nature” or “physical laws”. Beyond the realm of inanimate matter, in the realm of plants “biological laws” are added to the “physical laws” to “determine” and “guide” this realm of Allah’s creation. Further still, in the animal world, the element of “natural instincts” is added to the aforementioned physical and biological laws to govern the growth and development of the animal kingdom and similar species. Further yet in the human realm, the dimension of ratiocination or the “rules of logic” is added to the aforementioned three elements to “determine” and “guide” the human being --- and beyond the domain of ratiocination or rationality there is nothing but “Divine Revelation”. The functioning of the entirety of creation depends on these laws and the specific realm to which a specific portion of creation belongs --- this normal functioning of the created order does not require any additional Divine Word “Be!”

But wherever there is a need to alter the normal functioning of the created order --- to alter the normal chain of “cause and effect” in order that a special Divine Decree be enacted --- then there is the need for a new Divine Word “Be”. In common parlance, in the case of the breakage of the normal chain of cause and effect (usually called a non-natural or miraculous happening), a new Divine Word “Be!” is inserted, so to say, at the point where one of the links in the normal chain of causation is missing. 

 

The virgin birth of Isa d (Jesus) is an illustration of this very process where the Divine Word replaced a missing link in the chain of causation by virtue of which a woman would get pregnant under normal circumstances. According to the normal physical and biological laws the birth of an individual requires both the male and female contribution towards a fertilized ovum which then develops into a human child. But in case of the birth of Isa (pbuh) (Jesus), the contribution of the father is completely missing --- meaning that one of the links in the normal chain of the causal factors of human birth is not there --- and it is this missing link which is replaced by the Divine Word “Be!” Consequently, it is for this very reason that Isa (pbuh) (the son of Maryam) is referred to in the Qur'an as “…..a Word from Allah”, “…..a Word from Him”, “His Word”.

The Qur’an states that the Divine compensation which is exacted for accidental homicide by a Muslim of a Muslim includes freeing of a believing slave or, for those who find this beyond their means, fasting for two months.

“And it is not conceivable that a believer should slay another believer, unless it be by mistake. And upon him who has slain a believer by mistake there is the duty of freeing a believing soul from bondage and paying an indemnity to the victim’s relations, unless they forgo it by way of charity. Now if the slain, while himself a believer, belonged to a people who are at war with you, [the penance shall be confined to] the freeing of a believing soul from bondage; whereas, if he belonged to a people to whom you are bound by a covenant, [it shall consist of] an indemnity to be paid to his relations in addition to the freeing of a believing soul from bondage. And he who does not have the wherewithal shall fast [instead] for two consecutive months. (This is) the atonement ordained by Allah: and Allah is indeed all-Knowing, Wise.”

(Qur’an, al-Nisa’, 4:92) 

Hence the freeing of slaves is invested with a special degree of spirituality in Islam since it is equivalent in status to prolonged fasting. This is an achievement of great significance indeed for it permits the process of the dismantling of the institution of slavery to proceed in a manner which ensures the full rehabilitation of the freed slaves.

The negative after-effects of slavery and, in particular, the damage to the human personality, are still very visible in the western hemisphere more than a century after the abolition of slavery in Western civilization. The descendants of freed slaves in the United States of America are yet to be successfully integrated into the American society. The explanation of this pathetic situation lies in the fact that slavery was abolished in response to basically economic compulsions with no effort whatsoever to restore the slave’s humanity, human rights and human dignity. Western critics of Islam would hasten to scurry around searching for whatever can be used to conceal or distort the noble words of Prophet Muhammad (sallalahu ta‘alah ‘alaihi wa Sallam) when he ordered:

“Give your slave to eat from what you eat, and give him clothes to wear which you wear.” 

(Bukhari)

Humanitarianism appears to have played a minor role in the whole affair. No evidence exists of any significant spiritual motivation in the dismantling of the institution of slavery in western civilization. (See the excellent work of Dr. Eric Williams, entitled Capitalism and Slavery)

We wish to suggest that this is the basic reason why western civilization has been able to live with, or at least to tolerate Western-imposed apartheid on the soil of the very continent from which the West enriched itself by enslaving a free people. In other words, apartheid is a manifestation of the spiritual bankruptcy of secular western civilization.

In India, on the other hand, the caste system imposes a very real form of slavery on millions of people in that hapless country. It is of crucial importance to note that there is a form of colour discrimination which is involved in the caste system. The fair-skinned Aryan is never at the bottom of the social order. That is reserved for the dark-skinned indigenous Indians. Although the caste system has been denounced by many great Hindu spiritual and religious leaders and Hindu reform movements, as well as being made illegal by the Indian constitution, it continues to survive and to impose terrible sufferings on low caste and casteless Hindus to this day. In Christianity as in Hinduism, there appears to be no basic linkage between fasting on the one hand, and the recognition of human freedom and dignity on the other. And it is the consequent inability to mobilize the spiritual consciousness and bring it to bear on such social problems as caste in India, apartheid in South Africa, and the integration of the descendants of freed slaves into American society which explains the continued existence of these manifestations of social cancer.

Islam’s basic achievement really lies in the functional linkage it has established between fasting, on the one hand, and charity, chastity and recognition of human freedom and dignity, on the other. The one envelops the others in a spiritual embrace of profound practical consequences.

When Muslims were ruled by those who lived lives faithful to Islam, one could not distinguish in Muslim society between the ex-slave and those who had never been enslaved. Freed slaves were integrated into Muslim society to such an extent that an ex-slave sometimes rose to become ruler of the Muslims.

It is only in this evil age of the ascendancy of a Zionist Judeo-Christian alliance which has taken control of the world through modern western civilisation, that Muslims are subjected to rulers who rule over them on behalf of their enemies. As a consequence Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia can boast of their high standard of living that rests on the foundations of slave wages. Indonesian maids who are paid the wages of a slave, and Bangladeshi, Filipino, Indonesian and Pakistani labourers who also work for slave wages, now blot the fair face of Islam.
