The
enemy, the sceptic, the missionary and their passive camp followers
will not stop bleating that "lslam was spread at the point of
the sword!" but they will not venture to answer our question --
"WHO BRIBEDCARLYLE!?"
In 1840 when Carlyle defended Muhammad (pbuh) and refuted the
allegation about the sword, there was nobody around to bribe.
The whole Muslim world was in the gutters. The countries of Islam
were all under subjugation by the Christians, except for a few like
Persia, Afghanistan and Turkey who were onlynominally independent. There were
no riches to flaunt and no petro-dollars to bribe with!
That
was yesterday and many yesterdays ago, but what about today, in
modern times? It is claimed that"Islam is the fastest
growing religion in the world." The overall increase of all the
sects and denominations ofChristianity was a staggering 138
per cent with the incredible increase of Islam by 235 per cent in the
sameperiod
of time of half-a-century. It is further affirmed that in Britain
and the United States of America, Islam isthe fastest growing faith. It is
said that in Britain "There are more Muslims than Methodists in
the country."
You have a right to ask, "What
sword?" The answer is, "THE SWORD INDEED!" {Thomas
Carlyle} It is thesword of intellect? It is the
fulfillment of yet another prophecy; IT IS HE (God Almighty) WHO HAS
SENT HISMESSENGER
(Muhammad) WITH GUIDANCE AND THE RELIGION OF TRUTH (Islam) THAT HE
MAYMAKE
IT PREVAIL OVER ALL RELIGIONS, AND ENOUGH IS GOD FOR A WITNESS. Holy
Qur'an 48:28
The
destiny of Islam is spelt out here in the clearest terms. Islam is to
master, overcome and supersede everyother faith - That He (God
Almighty) make it (Islam) prevail over all religions … In Arabic
the word is Deen[Usually translated as
Religion, which literally Islam is not.] (literally meaning "Way
of Life",), to supersede all, whether it be Hinduism, Buddhism,
Christianism,[In
the time of Thomas Carlyle this was the team applied toChristianity.] Judaism,
Communism or any other "ism." This is the destiny of
Allah's Deen.
The same Qur'anic Verse is repeated in chapter 61 verse 9 which ends
with this slight variation - (Never mind) Thoughthe unbelievers might be averse
to it (Islam).
THE METHOD OF
ISLAMIC REVOLUTION IN THE PRESENT AGE
These
are the six phases(or stages)of the methodologyfor anIslamicrevolutionthatIhavediscussedinavery concisemannerhere.I haveunderstoodthis revolutionary processfromtheblessedSeerahofProphetMuhammad (SAW) --- my only sourcefor such study.NowI
wouldlike to drawyourattentionto anotherimportant fact, whichis thatthe first four phasesof the
revolutionaryprocesswill, in everyage remainthe sameas are foundin the Seerah of the Prophet (SAW).Thusthe first phaseof the struggle
for anIslamicrevolutionwouldstill be"Invitationor callto Faith"and"disseminationof its message".Inthisphase the Quranwill occupya positionof centralimportance and the revolutionaryconcept(or viewpoint) underlying the messageof Islamwillbethatof Tauheed. In thewordsof Iqbal, poetof the East:
There
weretimes whenGod'sOnenesswas
A
living force in the worldof time and
space.
But
subtlepointsby pedants raised
Havechangedit into a theologicalmaze.
NowadaysTauheedhasbeenreducedtoanissueof argumentandpolemicsbetweentheMuslim sectsof Barelvis andtheAhl-e-Hadith,Atheological tug-of-waris takingplaceoverthiswhereasTauheed is in factthe very foundation of socio-political
system,a completesystemof life anda systemof Justice.
The
next phaseis that of "Discipline
or Organisation". Here also wewill
haveto followtheUswa or modelof Prophet
Muhammad(SAW)exactlyasitis.In
myopinionthe practical exampleset for the Ummah by ProphetMuhammad (SAW) asregardsdiscipline or organisation is that of Bai'yah. Bai'yah will showhowa
partyor movementfor an Islamic revolutionis organised. You may not necessarily agree with myopinion. But in mycandidassessment thereis no other
optionintheSeerah otherthantheSurman ofBai'yahto constituteandorganizea movement(a partyorgroupof people) for an Islamic revolution.
Thereisa
Hadith(tradition)oftheProphetMuhammad (SAW)attributedtoHazratIbada binAl-Samai(RAA), a MuttafaqAleh Hadith, theauthenticityof whichis attested bytwoIviuhaditheen(Hadiili scholars)
ofgreateminence. Fromthe pointof viewof genuineness no
Hadiihis more authenticthana
MuttafaqAleh Hadith(overwhichHadith scholars-ImamBukhariandImamMuslimhavea consensus of
opinionas to its authenticity). The
wordsof thisHadithareso comprehensiveintheirmeaningthatI
amdeeplyconvinced thatit embodies a complete constitutionalframeworkof a movementor partyforan Islamicrevolution. I
wouldrequestyouto
listencarefully andpayfullattentionto the Hadith andits meaning. The translation of the Hadithreads:
HazratUbadabinAl-Samit(RAA)narratedthat"We tooktheBai'yh(solemnoath)upontheMessenger's handthatwewouldlistenandobeywhateverhe ordersusto do,whetherit be convenientordifficult forus, whetherwefinditagreeableorwhetherwe wouldhaveto compelourselvesto doit, whetherhe prefersothersover us andwhomsoever he appoints as Ameerwe will obey him andwill not
quarrelwithhim. Butatthesametimewewill, whereverwemaybe, definitely voiceouropinionandsay whatever wefeel isthetruth.Andinmattersof religionandfaithwe willneverhesitateto speakthetruthoutof
fearof a critic'srebuke."
(SahihBukhariand Sahih Muslim)
This,in myview, istheSunnahof ProphetMuhammad (SAW) as regardsthephaseof discipline or
organisation. Theonlydifferencetobenotedinthiscaseisthat obediencetotheProphet(SAW) wasunconditionaland absolute, becauseeverything he saidfell in the category of lvui'arooh
(considered to be good by moral standards). But now whenheis nolongeramongus, obedience to anyAmeer willnotbeabsolute;itwillinsteadbewithinthe limits/boundsof Ma'aroof---parameterssetbytheQuran andSunnah.
In
the phase(or stage)of "Training" also wewillhaveto adhereentirelytotheProphet'smethod.Ofutmost importanceinthisregardisobservingthecompulsory prayersanddoingso withregularity. In additiontothis recitingthe HolyQuranandofferingthe late night(vigil) prayersshouldbecomea regularhabitas far as possible. In the
samewaythe phaseof "PassiveResistance"willalso be an inevitableconsequenceandwill haveto be adoptedas foundin the Seerah(of ProphetMuhammad SAW) during the Makkanperiod:enduring patientlythe hardshipsand severitiesinvolvedintheinvitationtofaithandthe conveyanceof its
messageandin the struggleto establish Allah'sChosenFaith(Islam),remainingsteadfastinits wakeandrestrainingoneselffromretaliating.Theseare thefourinitialphasesof anIslamicrevolutionforwhich we will haveto adoptthe Prophet'smethodin toto.
Howeverforthefifthandsixthphasesofthestruggle namelythoseof "ActiveResistanceandArmedConflict", wewillhavetoexerciseIjtihadandmakeafew amendmentsinviewoftheprevailingcontemporary
circumstances.Tryto understandthereasonbehindthis. InthefirstplacethesocietytowhichtheProphet Muhammad(SAW) belongedwasin all respectsa purely
paganArabsociety. If sucha strugglewereto take placein anyMuslimstatetodayconfrontationwillbewith Muslimsevenif themajorityof its rulersandpopulation consistofmorallycorruptandnon-practicingMuslims. They maypossessa secularmindsetbutthey do recitethe Kalimahandas
suchthey will be countedas Muslims. This isonewayinwhichthecurrentsocio-politicalscenario differsfromthatinthe past.
Secondlytherewasn'tmuch differenceamongthe combatantsin armsusedin termsof quality:thesametypeofswordswasusedbyboththe MuslimsandtheMushrikeenandKuffaar(idolatorsand disbelievers).Althoughdisparitydidexistintermsof numbers butessentiallythesametypeof spears, swords, bows, horsesand camels were possessedby both
sides. But nowadayswhatevertypeofexploitativesystemisin existence,be it a capitalistsystemor a feudalsystem,it has theprotectionoftheGovernmentwhichinturnis composedofindividualsbelongingtosuchexploitative classeswhoseinterestsarecloselylinkedwiththe prevailingsystem. Asa resulttheGovernmentcomesin opposition (against the Islamicrevolution movement) with unlimited resources and powerat theirdisposal. Therefore engaginginarmedconflict inthepresentageisquite difficult.
Analternative willhaveto befoundfor it. Such
alternativeshavebeenprovidedtousbysocial developmentsduringthepastfewcenturies.Holding peaceful
demonstrations, stagingpicketing, blockade,
and openchallenge totherulingpartythatanythingthatis againstIslamwouldhappenonlyoverourdeadbodies. These are someof the alternatives provided by the gradual
development overthe yearsin society.Untilthis phaseis reachedonlythepowerofwords, bothwrittenand spoken, will be
usedto expresscondemnationof practices thatareagainstIslam, contrarytoitsspiritandHaram (forbidden in Islam).
ButwhenthestageisreachedwheretheIslamic RevolutionaryMovementfeelsthatithasmustered enoughpowertopressurisetheGovernmentthrough stagingprotestsitwillopenlydeclarethatanti-Islamic practiceswillnotbetoleratedandallowedtoflourish. They will comeout on
the streetsin protest, holdpeaceful demonstrations,stagesit-insandpicketing.Whatwill happenin response to all this?Batoncharges andarrests wouldbe made.Protesters wouldbe thrownintolock-ups. Takinga furtherstepthegovernment willresortto firing andshelling. Whywouldthepeopleassociated withthe IslamicRevolutionary Movement showtheirbackswhen theyhavealreadytakena vowto lay downtheirlives and are preparedto
sufferall eventualities? AnUrdupoethas beautifullyportrayedthispassionofrevolutionary workers thus:
True
Muslimsaim at martyrdom only
Neitherthe rule of earthnor its pleasuresis their goal.
NoweithertheGovernmentwillsurrenderbecauseafter all howlongthelawenforcing agenciescanstainhands withthebloodoftheirownpeople, whobelongtothe samecountryas the policeandarmydoes. The members oftheMovementwhosacrificetheirlivesforAllah's Cause, ontheotherhand, haveatremendoussenseof relief by discharging their divinely-ordainedduty.
Thishasbeendemonstratedinthepresenterabythe Iranians.Althoughtherequireddegreeof effortwasnot madeinthefirstfourphasesoftherevolutioninIran, therebeinga lot of deficiencies leftthatIdonotwishto discusshere.TheIraniansneverthelessdidmanageto proveone thing. They did not carryout an armedrebellion againsttheShah (of Iran).Theydidnotresorttoarmed aggression. Insteadtheythemselves cameoutfor protest demonstrationson thestreetstolaydowntheirlives. Thousandswerekilledbutthisdidnotdeterthem. However, the resultof
thesesacrifices wasthatthe police wererenderedhelplessandthearmyrefusedtofire anymoreuponthedemonstratorsandsoeventuallythe Shah (of Iran) was forcedto
flee from his country.
The(so-called) Shahan-i-Shah(ShahofShahsorKingof Kings)whowastheallyandchief protectorof American Interestsin that region was deniedrefuge even by America. What powerwasit
thatforcedthe shah of Iranto abandon his powerseat andflee fromhis country? That powerwas the resolveandspiritof the massesandtheirreadinessto sacrificetheirlivesforIslamwithoutwhicha preexisting system does not change. So with
the help of Ijtihad, and after takingintoconsiderationthecurrentcircumstances,we cometotheconclusion thatindecidingaboutthefinal actionwewillhavetoadheretothepolicyof"passive resistance"
and an" armedconflict" is not
necessary.
Howeverwhereconditionsaresuchthattheyfavouran "Armed Conflict",thereit willhaveto beopted,likethe onethatistakingplaceinAfghanistanthesedays.Itis takingplacetherebecause (i)peopleof Afghanistan as a
nationhavefor centuries existedonthe
worldmapas an independentnationwhereWestern Imperialism
couldnot cast its shadows. They
wereneverenslaved like the people ofthesub-continentwhoremainedundertheyokeof BritishRaj fortwohundredyears; (ii) weapons arequite freelyavailablethere. It will be a rarehousehold thatdoes nothavea weapon.Theirchildren arefroman earlyage accustomedtoplayingwithgunsandrifles.Alsothe terrainofthecountry is suchthata
guerilla warcanbe foughtthere whereas the terrainin our
country is suchthat it is impossibleto fight a guerilla war.
Thuswherecircumstancesarefavourableforanarmed conflict,thenaccordingtoaFatwa byImam Abu Hanifa
(RA)theuseof force is permissible
andarmedactioncan betakentoputanendtothepoliticalsystemwhich thwarted theShariah. Itis notas if the optionof an armed revoltagainsta Muslimrulerwhois
a rebellious sinner(in mattersof faith)is altogether invalid.Anarmedrevoltis permissible butthe condition that has beenset for it by the Islamicscholarsisthatthereshouldbesufficientpower suchthatto the best of one'sassessment andanalysisthere isa highchanceofsuccessintherevolt.Whatactually happensdependsupona lotof unforeseen factorswhich makeit difficultfor us to
predictthe resultwithcertainty. So, eventhoughthiscourseof actionis conditional, it is certainthatit is not Haram absolutely.
But
the conditionswithinour country makeit impossibleto practicallycarry out an
armedrebellion. The alternativesfor it are peacefulandorganized demonstrations andall
those measures thatI havediscussedalready. In this waywe can at least lay downour lives for Allah'sCause. We haveonly butour lives to give andwe shouldalwaysbe prepared for this.
LetmenarratetoyoutwoAhadithofProphet Muhammad(SAW) in this context. It wouldmeanfulfilling thatwhichisdemandedbytheloveforProphet Muhammad(SAW)andhistruefollowing, ifourinner feelingsresonatethe wordsof theProphet'sHadith. It has beennarratedbyAbuHuraira(RAA)thatprophet Muhammad(SAW) said:
"By Him in Whose

martyred, and then get resurrectedagainandthengetmartyredandthen get resurrectedagain andthen get martyred."
(Sahih Al Bukhari:
Volume IV Book 52 Hadith No.54)
The
presenceof sucha desirein the heartof everyMuslim istestimonytohis/herbeliefandisafundamental requirementof truefollowingof the prophetMuhammad (SAW).Similarlyon anotheroccasionthe Prophet(SAW) said:(Narratedby Abu Huraira RAA),
"Onewhodiesin a statethathe neitherfoughtin Allah'scause nor even wishedthat he
shoulddo so, he suffers froma
sort of hypocrisy, andhe will not die as a true believer."
(Sahih Muslim)
Inotherwords, holdingthedesirethat,'OAllah!May thislifeofminebespent, mybloodbespilledandmy bodycut to piecesin holding highthe flag of Your chosen Faith',is essential evenif suchan occasiondoesnot arise. TherearemanyamongtheBlessedCompanions(RAA) whopassedawaybeforethestartof militarycampaigns in theprophet'sstruggle. It couldhavehappenedthata Companion(RAA)dieda naturaldeathduringthetime Prophet Muhammad(SAW) wasin Makkah, andhe may nothavehadtheopportunitytogetmartyredin battle.
