In order to complete the obligations and fulfill our Deen one must understand the Qur'an.
Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
“So, when the Qur’an is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy”
[al-A‘raaf 7:204].
As listening in the complete sense is that in which one understands and ponders.
